Hello, everyone. I am happy to announce that the lighting improvement project at Sunland Park is now complete. This active park that serves Sunland-Tujunga and surrounding communities saw a total of 100 lights throughout the park addressed as part of this project. Improvements included replacing existing lighting fixtures and upgrading fixtures to bright LED lights, and also installing brand new lighting fixtures altogether. These lights are on photocells and turn on automatically to brightly illuminate the park from dusk until dawn. This project will provide much-enhanced visibility and safety at Sunland Park. See the attached video for some images of the project, in case you haven’t been through the park lately.
This project is just one of many recent improvements brought to this active park under the tenure of the Councilwoman, including the new exercise equipment and hydration station added next to the Senior Center in the fall of 2018, the repaired drainage/fencing project from spring of 2019, the new indoor/outdoor basketball courts renovated last summer, and the playground upgrades from the fall of 2019 (including a new swingset, brand new shade structure, resilient playground surfacing, and a new hydration station). We look forward to continuing to advocate for long-overdue improvements for this community. Please sign up for our newsletter at monicarodriguez.org to keep updated on projects like these and happenings throughout the district. Thank you, and stay safe out there.

Addition of Thirty New Climate Resilient Trees at Stonehurst Park

I’m pleased to announce the addition of thirty new climate resilient trees at Stonehurst Park — a very active park space in our district. I partnered with the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks and Los Angeles Beautification Team to secure funding and remove large dead trees surrounding the picnic areas, which pose a danger to park users.

You too can support efforts to green your neighborhood. Visit City Plants to secure your free shade trees to plant in your own yard, private property, parkway, or that strip between the sidewalk and the street. More information here: https://www.cityplants.org/our-programs

WE are ONE LA

As an 18-year-old in 1992, to a role in leadership today, I see the need to reform systems that continue to hold so many back. Today, communities of color are dying at a higher rate to COVID-19. The economy is at a depression-level and now we’re amidst civil unrest. Where we go from here requires us to let go of the status quo and invest in strategies that have proven results.

Our greatest gains in public safety will be achieved through efforts that build trust. It underscores that investments in youth achieve greater public safety outcomes, not policing efforts alone. Serving youth through a 360-degree lens will produce better outcomes that strengthen communities.

We have an opportunity to shape a budget that reflects a paradigm shift in how to make our communities safer. It begins with increasing investments in youth programming and expands on the proven community policing models and reforms that deliver a safer LA for us ALL. We are one LA.

I’m pleased to share the progress we’ve made with Operation Bright S.P.O.T, “Strategic Partners Outfoxing Trash” in Mission Hills. This month, we are bringing this program focusing our efforts on Sepulveda Blvd. from the 118 to Chatsworth St. and Chatsworth St. from Sepulveda Blvd. to Columbus Ave. My team conducted weed abatement, power washing, gum removal, street sweeping, and red curb repainting. Our work along the 118 onramps and offramp was especially critical to preventing any brush fires during the summer months. If you have a commercial corridor in mind that may benefit from Operation Bright Spot, please call my Sylmar District Office at (818) 756-8409.

blood drive this week in Sylmar

We had a successful turn out at our blood drive this week in Sylmar at Palacio Torres. This is the second successful event we’ve hosted in partnership with American Red Cross, Casa Torres, and the Red Cross Sylmar Coalition in the last month. Donating blood is one of the easiest and most important things a person can do to help save a life. Now more than ever, blood donations are critical. If you missed the blood drive, you can schedule an appointment online. Please visit https://www.redcrossblood.org for more information.

My office partnered with the Los Angeles Department of Transportation to install new continental crosswalks at the intersection of Laurel Canyon Boulevard and Brand Boulevard. These improvements will help increase visibility and ensure the safety of the public. This is one of several other crosswalks in Mission Hills that has recently been upgraded. If you see a similar issue in your neighbor, please don’t hesitate to contact my Sylmar District Office at (818) 756-8409.
