Removal of dead trees- Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez

Removal of Dead Trees

This week, my office worked with the Bureau of Street Services to remove a dead tree at the intersection of Arnwood Road and Jimenez Street in Lake View Terrace. This month, 8 dead trees were removed in Lake View Terrace and over 20 trees were removed in Sunland-Tujunga. Removing dead vegetation in our district helps beautify our community and increase safety for our neighborhoods. If you see a dead tree or dead tree stump, please contact my district office at 818-485-0600.

Sunland Tujunga Branch Library

Once upon a time, there was a child who could listen to stories all day long! Once that child was there in all of us, just like the kids today who enjoy a good story while their mind runs wild with imagination. The fairy-tale characters, the plot twists, and the magical places fascinate them, as they are transported to new worlds. That said, storytelling for kids is an art and not an easy one at that.

That ‘art’ would be conducted by the Sunland – Tujunga Branch Library on January 15, 2020 from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Story-telling and crafts for children will be done at Sunland – Tujunga Branch Library.

Sunland Tujunga Neighborhood Council Library Oak

From Sunland Tujunga Neighborhood Council’s Library

Dear Neighbors,

As patrons of the Sunland-Tujunga Library, we know you share our affection for the Coast Live Oak Tree outside our branch. The tree has been a fixture of our community for many years, and when we realized it was suffering, we hoped we could do something to save it.

We hired a certified arborist to evaluate the tree and make recommendations for how to proceed. Unfortunately, the assessment indicated that we will need to remove the tree because of its severe structural decline.

As always, public health and safety are our priority, so the tree removal is scheduled to take place in the coming weeks.

On Monday, January 13 at 9 a.m. the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library and the local community will celebrate the life of the tree and give it a fond farewell.

Pasadena bakery fined $81,000

A Pasadena bakery has been fined more than $80,000 for minimum wage violations and various California labor code violations, city officials announced today.

Chapala Bakery at 265 E. Orange Grove Blvd. was assessed nearly $81,000 in back wages, damages, premiums and interest after a joint investigation by the city’s Planning & Community Development Department and the California Department of Industrial Relations, according to Lisa Derderian, Pasadena public information officer.

Responding to an employee-generated complaint, city staff interviewed several bakery employees and determined that violations of Pasadena’s minimum wage ordinance and California Labor Code had occurred, she said.

City representatives held several meetings with the business owner in an effort to resolve the matter, but no agreement was reached, Derderian said.

The fines include minimum wage violations, overtime and split shift pay, meal and rest period pay, and liquidated damages due employees.

Staff from the DIR Judgement Enforcement Unit continue to investigate the proprietor’s various assets in an effort to recover funds for the payment of unpaid wages, penalties and damages.

Eagle Valley Basketball Lose 54-83 to Montrose

On Thursday night Eagle Valley boys basketball lost 83-54 to Montrose in Gypsum. Nando Vidaurri and Keegan Garvey of Eagle Valley each hitting twice 3-pointers from behind the arc during the first half. Branden Vigil, who led the home team with 10 points, and Bryan Martinez both slashed through to the hole as part of the attack.

“Your goal is to make other teams play to your strengths,” Devils Justin Brandt said. “We need to play fast and with great spacing and communicate well. Sometimes, we may need to have two guys covering one, but if we’re playing well, we can do that.”

Montrose was able to pound the ball inside with Trey Reese finishing with 14 points and Trey Schwerdtfeger ending up with 10.

Eagle Valley was down just 37-26 at the half, within striking distance, before the Devils’ offense had just one field goal during the first six minutes of the second half, allowing the visitors to blow the game open.
