Invite You to Visit the Dia de Los Muertos

We invite you to visit the Dia de Los Muertos altar at Pacoima City Hall. The altar will be up starting this Sunday, November 1, through Monday, November 15.

Every year, our Latino community celebrates Dia de Los Muertos — a holiday to remember and pay homage to those who are no longer with us. Traditionally, our office would close down Van Nuys Blvd. in Pacoima and host a street festival. However, given the COVID-19 pandemic and our responsibility to socially distance, this year, we will be creating an elaborately decorated altar at Pacoima City Hall to commemorate those who have passed.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call our Pacoima City Hall office at (818) 485-0600.

The New Therapeutic Transporation Pilot Program
The New Therapeutic Transporation Pilot Program

Yesterday, in partnership with City and County local leaders, we announced the new Therapeutic Transporation Pilot Program, a joint effort that represents an unarmed model of emergency response for those experiencing a mental health crisis.

The City and County are pursuing a three-pronged approach to respond to non-emergency calls for service, with each component diverting calls from predetermining categories away from traditional LAPD and LAFD responses.

Our police and firefighters always answer the call to protect and serve, but they’re too often asked to respond to situations that would be better handled by professionals highly-trained to assist people experiencing a mental health crisis. This a moment to shift paradigms, breaking down silos, and commit resources toward our goals to reimagine public safety and save lives.

The pilot program, set to launch in early 2021 and be studied for one year with a focus on sustaining and expanding the program into other cities within L.A. County. Individuals in crisis will be transported to a local where they can be stabilized in a therapeutic van designed to meet their needs and accompanied by clinicians who can provide support and access to mental healthcare.

Emergency Preparedness Procedures and Checklists

As winds start to pick up in our community, the weather conditions may cause fire to spread very rapidly. Now more than ever, it’s important to take steps to prepare yourself for a wildfire emergency.

Check out the new LAFD ‘Wildfire’ page on the LAFD website for tips on hardening your home, preparing for an evacuation order, and viewing safety videos on wildfire in the City of LA: https://lafd.org/wildfire.

During my recent Wildfire and Emergency Preparedness webinar series, my office created the Emergency Preparedness Procedures and Checklists. To receive the complete checklist, please call my office: Pacoima (818)485-0600 or Sylmar (818)756-8409.

Metro is Bringing Light Rail to the Valley

Metro is bringing light rail to the Valley to make travel more convenient. The project plans include building a new median-running light rail line with 14 stations along Van Nuys Blvd from the Metro G Line (Orange) to the Sylmar/San Fernando Metrolink Station.

Metro has extended the Final EIR/EIS for the East San Fernando Valley Transit Corridor by 15 days. This environmental document informs the community where and how the light rail will run, potential impacts to the community, and how those impacts will be addressed. The community will now have until November 17th to provide final comments on any remaining issues or things you would like to see addressed in this project.

To request a copy of the FEIR/FEIS, call the project hotline at 818-701-3844 or visit https://www.metro.net/projects/east-sfv/

Installed Third Left-Turn Phasing Signal

I’m pleased to announce that we have installed our third left-turn phasing signal installing at Foothill and Apperson in Tujunga. This new installation is an improvement for our community that has been impacted by unsafe roads resulting in fatalities in the Foothill Blvd. corridor.

This project is part of my broader effort to create safer streets in the 7th Council District. This new technology tracks traffic flow, minimizing traffic collisions, and increasing pedestrian safety.

If there’s an intersection with safety concerns in your area, please contact my Pacoima field office at 818-485-0600.
