#AD39, California has begun to offer Pfizer booster shots! The Pfizer vaccine booster is currently only available to the following groups who have already received their first two doses:

– 65 years and over
– Residents of long-term care facilities
– 18 to 64 years old with underlying medical conditions
– 18 to 64 years old with high institutional or occupational risk, including healthcare workers, first responders, teachers and day care staff, grocery workers, and workers in homeless shelters or prisons

Amazing News! California Governor Gavin Newsom just signed my bill, #AB1096 to remove the term “alien” from California law when referring to immigrants and noncitizens!

Today marks a huge step forward in the fight to dismantle institutional racism targeted specifically towards our immigrant communities. For decades, the term ‘alien’ has become weaponized and has been used in place of explicitly racial slurs to dehumanize immigrants. I want to thank the Governor for recognizing the importance of this bill and taking action to remove derogatory language from our laws.

From Assemblymember Luz Rivas Desk – Recognize Richard E. Byrd Middle School with Barona’s Education Grant

It’s my great honor to recognize Richard E. Byrd Middle School with Barona’s Education Grant from Barona Band of Mission Indians. This $5,000 grant will go towards updating the school’s library collection with approximately 250 books.

Thank you to Barona Band of Mission Indians for making this possible. This grant will go a long way in helping #AD39’s students achieve continued academic success!

Another successful Drive-Thru food pantry in Sun Valley! While families are still recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic, it is critical that our most vulnerable families have the support that they need to make it through this trying time. I’m happy to share that this past Monday, 1,000 boxes of groceries were distributed to families in need throughout #AD39.

Thank you to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, North Valley Caring Services, the National Health Foundation , our volunteers, and Council President Nury Martinez for leading this effort.

Congratulations to Fresh Start Healthy School Meals for their grand opening in #AD39!

Fresh Start has been a leader in the school food service industry by serving health conscious and delicious meals to youth throughout the state. This is a tremendous need in my district, which is why I have advocated for school meal funding for the past few years. Through these constant efforts California became the first state in the country to offer #SchoolMealsForAll K-12 students. The universal school meal program will ensure students focus on academics rather than where their next meal will come from.

This is why I am honored to welcome Fresh Start to Sylmar! Thank you Veronica Alcaraz, and Juan Saucedo for your commitment to providing quality and affordable meals to students in our community!

California’s homeless youth population is large and growing: A recent study found that the state’s homeless student population has increased by nearly 50% over the past decade.

My bill, #AB27, will help K-12 schools identify homeless children and provide services to their families. EdSource ran a great piece highlighting the need for my legislation.

I’m thrilled that President Joe Biden has recognized the significant effects that #ExtremeHeat has on our disadvantaged communities, both rural and urban, and workers nationwide.

#CA did not wait to act – I was proud to help secure $150 million in our budget for local governments and organizations to use for programs to mitigate extreme heat. These mitigation efforts include (but are not limited to) cool roofs and streets, urban greening, and developing climate resiliency centers.
