In remembrance of Cesar Chavez, we hosted a community cleanup. Cesar Chavez’s legacy taught us that together we can be part of the solution to improve the quality of life in our communities.

Keeping our communities clean takes teamwork. Together we can sustain the cleanliness of our neighborhoods. I invite you to join me and your neighbors to be part of the solution by joining an upcoming clean-up, picking up litter in your own neighborhood, and reporting issues like illegal dumping to MyLA311. Yesterday I began my morning honoring the legacy of Cesar Chavez by hosting a day of service cleaning the grounds at Vaughn School, with the unveiling of the “Pacoima Legacies” mural at Hillery T. Broadous Elementary School in Pacoima and ended the day with our Sanitation Composting Workshop at Lopez Canyon. Let’s continue the good work in partnership to help our community achieve its greatest potential.

Unveiled the “Pacoima Legacies” Mural
Today we unveiled the “Pacoima Legacies” mural at Hillery T. Broadous Elementary School in Pacoima. The mural celebrates the efforts of Dr. Hillery T. Broadous, pastor and founder of Calvary Baptist Church in Pacoima. He, along with his wife Rosa, dedicated their lives to improving the quality of life in their community. They helped organize the San Fernando Valley branch of the NAACP as well as advocated for funding for what is now known as Hubert Humphrey Park. In honor of their contributions to the community, Fillmore Elementary school was renamed Hillery T. Broadous Elementary school.

The mural, designed and painted by local artists Juan Pablo Reyes, Erica Friend and Javier Lopez, brings together the full spectrum of our community.

Chief Crowley

Meet our new LA Fire Chief. As the second-largest fire department in the country, her well deserved appointment defies the notion that has historically prevented many women from advancing in careers predominantly held by men. Chief Crowley is undeniably qualified, exhibiting the experience, character, intellect, and work ethic that has not only earned her the respect among her peers but has enabled her to break this glass ceiling. As the daughter of an LA City Firefighter, as Chair of Public Safety, I couldn’t be more proud to be part of this moment in our City’s history and continuing our work together. Congratulations, Chief Crowley!

Yesterday, I was honored to host AD39’s 2022 Woman of the Year, Mireya Garcia Pacheco, at my District Office to celebrate her recognition! Miraya, a long-time Pacoima resident, has dedicated her time to providing services to hundreds of San Fernando Valley residents during the COVID-19 pandemic. She is well-known for her commitment to families and communities, which she demonstrates by keeping them informed about the various resources accessible to them around the district. Mireya is a true champion in the San Fernando Valley, and it is a pleasure to have recognized such a dedicated and long-serving member of the community!

Received the “Coolest in LA” Award from Climate Resolve

Last Thursday, I was honored to receive the “Coolest in LA” award from Climate Resolve for my legislative initiative on climate change.

During my time in the legislature, I have taken initiative by authoring several bills to tackle climate change, specifically extreme heat. Extreme heat continues to prove it’s a clear and present danger to our public, which is why this year, I am partnering with Climate Resolve again to introduce legislation to create a Chief Heat Officer and empower the state in the fight against #ExtremeHeat.

As Chair of the Assembly Committee on Natural Resources, I remain committed to meeting the challenges of climate change and I will continue to protect and preserve our natural resources and environment for future generations. A special thank you to Climate Resolve for this great honor, and to Speaker Anthony Rendon for presenting me with the award!

Each year, I honor a #Nonprofit organization for its extraordinary service to our communities in the San Fernando Valley and AD-39.

Non-profit organizations play such an important role in uplifting our community members in times of need.
This year to give more deserving nonprofit organizations an opportunity to be recognized for their extraordinary service, I am seeking community input for AD 39’s Non-Profit of the Year 2022.
If you know of any inspiring non-profits of great distinction and service in the community, kindly submit your nominee by April 30.

Nominations can be submitted on my website: https://a39.asmdc.org/non-profit-year

Leading the effort with the City of Los Angeles Bureau of Street Services(BSS) they recently applied a slurry seal between Sharp Ave. and Chamberlain St. in Mission Hills. Applying a slurry seal is a cost-effective technique that maintains the good condition of the street resurfaced in the past several years, sealing cracks and gaps that allow water to infiltrate to the base and weaken the street. This economic treatment adds another five years to the life expectancy of the asphalt.

For more information on upcoming projects in the district, please visit the Streets LA website at https://streetsla.lacity.org/ and select ‘Road Repair’.
