Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez remembering Ritchie Valens

Today marks 61 years since the passing of Ritchie Valens, Buddy Holly, and P.J. “The Big Bopper” Richardson in a tragic plane crash on Feb 3rd, 1959, also known as “The Day The Music Died.”

Ritchie Valens, a Pacoima native, and his legacy lives on through public art and installations like Levi Fonz Ponce‘s mural (located at 13433 Van Nuys Blvd), Ritchie Valens Recreation Center, and the dedication of the 5 Freeway in the San Fernando Valley.

Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez - Bioswales at Van Nuys Blvd.

Great news! Los Angeles Sanitation & Environment, Los Angeles Department of Water & Power and the State Coastal Conservancy selected Van Nuys Blvd. in Pacoima to install bioswales. This Van Nuys Blvd. Green Street Project will capture urban runoff from a 100-acre watershed, infiltrate the water into the ground and help limit floods in our neighborhoods. The project assists the City of LA to meet water quality standards by removing pollutants such as trash, bacteria, metals, and nutrients. Keep a look out for bioswales in your community! We are expecting more to be built in the upcoming months. For more information visit: https://bit.ly/37VnxKi

Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez - Good Luck to Richard Sherman

Good luck to Richard Sherman as he heads to his third Super Bowl today! Coming from Compton and graduating from Stanford University, Sherman is certainly no stranger to hard work. His unrelenting work ethic and determination got him through injury to get back in the game and ready for Super Bowl LIV.

Had the opportunity to recognize Richard and his father when I served on the Board of Public Works, his father is a part of the City family at LA Sanitation and we are proud to see our very own success. Congratulations Richard and good luck today!

Sunland-Tujunga Neighborhood Council STNC - USC's Price School of Public Policy

The Masters in Public Policy students from USC’s Price School of Public Policy team is working in conjunction with the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) to assist in the creation of their Standards of Cover (SoC) report, which helps inform LAFD as to where emergency resources are needed across the City of Los Angeles. For the first phase of this project, they have developed an electronic survey in order to collect community feedback. Your participation is vital to the success of this first step. Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez Resurfacing Stonehurst_Avenue

Residents contacted my office requesting street resurfacing along Stonehurst Avenue. My office worked with the City of Los Angeles Bureau of Street Services and the Pavement Preservation program to prioritize this long-overdue investment and repair other failed streets throughout the Stonehurst community. I am happy to announce this resurfacing project is officially complete (see list of streets below).

Concrete streets in the Stonehurst Historic Preservation Overlay Zone will be addressed separately, as concrete street repairs are handled through different funds. For questions about this resurfacing project, or if you see a street in need of repair, please contact my Pacoima district office at 818-485-0600.

Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez - Dead Trees Removal Foothill Blvd

Team MRod organized a cleanup with the LA Conservation Corps and the Urban Forestry Divison of City of Los Angeles Bureau of Street Services to remove three dead trees blocking the public right of way along Foothill Blvd. Removing these obstacles will help increase safety for equestrians and paves the way for the creation of a connected bridle path. The safety of our streets, sidewalks, and bridle paths are top priorities of mine. It takes all of us working together to keep our community safe and clean. See a street in need of cleaning?
Please contact my district office at 818-485-0600.
