Caltrans Maintenance Update on the I-118 WB Freeway onramp at San Fernando Road in Pacoima.
Upon inspection from Caltrans Engineers, serious slope damage was discovered following the extensive clean-up on Sunday, April 3, 2022, where over 600 cubic yards of trash and debris were removed for this location.

As a result of continued engagement from my office with Caltrans District 7, I am happy to announce that the state embankment will benefit from some future enhancement projects that will repair the critically damaged slope, add erosion control mulch, include new fencing, and introduce rock protection to help prevent future damage and access to this area.

I recently held a town hall on homelessness that you can watch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5nIUfAAlhM and encourage you to contact my office about waste and debris on state property so we can initiate the cleanup process with Caltrans, CHP, and local assistance providers.

North Valley Caring Services Received a Grant

At the height of the pandemic, North Valley Caring Services was instrumental in distributing meals to those in need. Through their effort, over 80,000 meals and five million pounds of food were distributed throughout the Northeast San Fernando Valley.

In recognition of the volunteers’ dedication, the organization received a grant from Cedar Sinai and Social Justice Partners Los Angeles that will be used to provide $1,500 checks to 57 volunteers. I am fortunate and thankful to have been invited to this event for this special occasion to recognize the work they have done. Thank you for your tireless service that makes a difference in the lives of our Angelenos!

Caltrans Maintenance Update

Yesterday, Caltrans District 7 conducted a clean up at the I-118 WB Freeway onramp at San Fernando Road in Pacoima.
In total, over 600 cubic yards of waste were removed from this area. Services and housing were offered to encampment residents thanks to Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority. Caltrans has a significant backlog as a result of their pausing cleanups over the last two years due to COVID-19.

We need to make sure the 39th Assembly District receives its fair share of the California Beautification funds to continue to invest in our communities, and I’m committed to fighting for more investments like these at the state level.

Our district is not a dumping ground and I look forward to continuing our city and state partnerships to push for change.

A special thanks to my staff for being on site last month, and for maintaining pressure to ensure this site was completely cleaned up.

Caltrans Maintenance Update Yesterday, Caltrans District 7

Last week, I had the opportunity to take a tour of the Owens-Illinois (O-I) manufacturing plant in Vernon, California. The visit allowed me to witness firsthand how the California Beverage Container Recycling Program recycles and manufactures glass bottles at the O-I facility. This plant receives recycled glass and melts it down into raw ingredients to create new glass products. As the Chair of the Assembly Natural Resources Committee, this journey allowed me to witness firsthand how important it is to make the recycling process simple for Californians. A special thank you to Glass Packaging Institute (GPI) and the staff at O-I for organizing this fantastic tour!

I’m happy to share that the I-5 NB Sheldon on-ramp to Wicks in Sun Valley has received maintenance! Caltrans removed trash and debris of approximately 240 cubic yards of material. Our unhoused neighbors also received outreach services from the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority.

Caltrans Maintenance Update on State Route 118 Freeway and San Fernando Road in Pacoima 🚧

I’ve been working with our constituent over the last month and as a result of the work by my team, Caltrans District 7 conducted a massive 5 day cleanup effort on February 28th through March 4th, 2022. Over 300 cubic yards of trash and hazardous waste was picked up during this initial cleanup. Whenever there is a homeless encampment on state property, CalTrans is required to work with local homelessness assistance providers to offer housing and services before being able to conduct a cleanup. This takes time for all teams involved to access cleanup locations, and coordinate services for the unhoused and removal of waste.

Since that time, Caltrans has provided the required notice for a final cleanup of this area which is scheduled to complete work on April 4th and 5th.

I am committed to working on homelessness issues in the district AD-39 and in Sacramento so that we can address the root causes of homelessness. That is why I have authored several bills including: AB 1845, AB 71, AB 58, AB 1702, AB 27, AB 2325 and AB 1220. I was also proud to deliver $2 billion in last year’s budget to help local governments combat the state’s homelessness crisis and over $300 million for local beautification and community improvement projects through the Clean California Program.
