Successful Launch of Our New Therapeutic Mental Health Van Program

This morning, I joined Mayor Eric Garcetti, Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda Solis, and LAFD Chief Ralph Terrazas to tour the successful launch of our new Therapeutic Mental Health Van program. This unique and first-ever model deploys trained County mental health workers to respond to individuals experiencing mental health crises.

As Chair of Public Safety, I led the fight to dedicate $2 million from our city budget, to match the County’s staffing investment that provides five vans staffed 24/7 across the city, including one that will be located in my district. One month of data has already shown great results. Individuals can now be treated and if necessary transported to County treatment facilities, rather than ambulance transport to an emergency room, reserving our firefighters, paramedics, and police officers to do the job they were trained to do.

This is just one example of how we’re leading a shift in public safety response to ensure we’re maximizing taxpayer dollars and improving service to our communities.

Yesterday marked the start of Womens History Month. Women in Los Angeles navigate a transportation system that is full of challenges and often unresponsive to their needs. To support an equitable and safe system, I introduced a motion in response to the study by LADOT Official “Changing Lanes: A Gender Equity Transportation Study”.

The motion aims to address efforts to develop and implement transportation programs that prioritize the needs of women of color and to identify the City resources required for these programs. I look forward to continuing to work with transit agencies and partner towards a more equitable and safe transit system for all.

Join Me in My Call to Shut Down Whiteman Airport

The two most recent accidents associated with Whiteman Airport sadly underscores what has exposed an unacceptable pattern, one that in absence of my call for closure, would have most assuredly been another incident swept under the rug. Our working class community deserves greater investments and protections and attention just as they’ve provided for Santa Monica, a community receiving mitigating benefits before the slated airport closure in 2028 and future use determined by the community.

We can’t afford these private interests to supersede community interests and wield intimidation tactics to force our silence when we need to demand protections and mitigations to operations that are indisputably contributing to the pollutants and safety of our residents. Join me in my call to shut down Whiteman Airport at the upcoming meetings hosted by the Los Angeles County Public Works Department.

If you have any questions, please call my Pacoima district office at (818) 485-0600.

Today, the Los Angeles City Council approved the appointment of Kristin Crowley as the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) Fire Chief. Chief Crowley will be the first woman to lead the LAFD in its 136-year history.

This historic vote is especially fitting on the first day of Womens History Month. Congratulations to Chief Crowley on a well deserved appointment. As Chair of the Public Safety Committee, I look forward to working with you in your new role.
