Assemblymember Luz Rivas - Clarification on COVID-19 Renter Update

#ICYMI – I provided a renter’s rights and protection post yesterday. It was brought to my attention the documentation of my post needed further clarification. Here is an updated renter’s right and protection information. Please share this information with your family and friends.

1) If you can afford to pay your rent, you should continue doing so.

2) However, if you are unable to pay rent because of #COVID19, you must notify your landlord in writing right away, and no later than seven days after the rent is due. The written notice must state that you are unable to pay the full rent due to reasons related to COVID-19.

*3) Tenants are NOT required to provide documents at the time they are notifying landlords that they are unable to pay rent due to COVID-19. However, I strongly suggest that you gather all documentation that shows your inability to pay rent, in case your landlord takes legal action after the Governor’s Executive Order expires. These documents will prove you are entitled to the protections offered under the Governor’s Executive Order to delay evictions.

Appropriate documentation includes notices of layoffs or reductions in hours, pay stubs, bank statements, or medical bills. Finally, please be prepared to respond in the case that your landlord files an eviction case. If this happens, consult with your legal aid or use courthouse self-help clinics.

Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez - Passed New Rules to Provide More Relief to Working Families and Small Businesses

Today I joined my colleagues in a remote Council meeting and passed new rules to provide more relief to working families and small businesses fighting to make ends meet in these extremely challenging times. From creating partnerships with nonprofits like North Valley Caring Services to feed families, developing a cash assistance program to help working parents with El Nido, to teaming up with Lyft to deliver food to homebound seniors, I’m pursuing every opportunity to support you while you honor orders to remain at home.

I also introduced a comprehensive package of legislation today to provide additional support and to further protect residents who have lost their jobs or had their businesses closed. A few of my motions include:

☑️Moratorium on debt collection
☑️Protections for families of first responders
☑️Redeployment of LADOT buses to deliver meals & resources to shelters
☑️Accelerating infrastructure projects during COVID-19
☑️Scaling impact for Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) to support small businesses

Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez - Urging The Federal Government to Include more Relief for Working Families, Renters, and Property Owners

Today I partnered with Council President Nury Martinez and Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell to urge the federal government to include more relief for working families, renters, and property owners in the next federal relief bill. We need a stimulus package that focuses on housing needs and relief efforts that will prevent even more people from falling into homelessness. Read more here: https://bit.ly/2xTUYQi

Today I partnered with Council President Nury

Through a Council directive I initiated with Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell, the City rolled out 300 hand sanitizing stations at bus shelters across Los Angeles. In addition to wearing face coverings and practicing physical distancing, keeping your hands clean is one of the most important ways to help slow the spread of COVID-19. This is especially important for the Northeast San Fernando Valley as the Van Nuys corridor is home of one of the highest bus ridership in the region.
