From Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez Desk

This week, I joined my friends at the North Valley Family YMCA’s Annual Thanksgiving Basket distribution event, an event I proudly fund and support each and every year. Over 3,600 families from across the Valley received free baskets that contained fresh vegetables and fruits, canned goods, stuffing, gravy, and a turkey.

During these unprecedented times, it’s important we share the holiday spirit by coming together as a community to provide the essentials for a Thanksgiving dinner to those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Our North Valley Family YMCA provides exceptional services to our youth and families, especially during these difficult times.

incredible community partner in North Valley Caring Services (NVCS)

Throughout the #COVID-19 pandemic, we have had an incredible community partner in North Valley Caring Services (NVCS). Last week, I joined North Valley Caring Services to help distribute turkeys, face masks, and hand sanitizers to over 1000 San Fernando Valley residents.

For many families and individuals financially strained by job loss, small gestures such as receiving essential resources make a tremendous impact on keeping families connected this #Thanksgiving season.

NVCS is a nonprofit organization serving the residents in the Northeast San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles. They have been an instrumental partner of mine and together we created programs that address homelessness with innovation, providing the first safe parking facility for RV’s, and the Homeless Services Hub, that co-locates LAUSD with Housing Navigators to connect families and students to housing resources to prevent homelessness.

I’m proud to support their wide array of programs to enable residents to lift themselves out of poverty, while also encouraging them to build a vision for their community’s future.

For more information about the programs NVCS offers, please visit https://www.nvcsinc.org/

In celebration of the anticipated holiday season and amidst this pandemic where our families are struggling, I’m distributing 1,000 free Thanksgiving Turkey in Pacoima and Sunland-Tujunga to families in need.

Working with community organizations, churches, and schools, my office identified CD7 families in need who received a voucher, which they are using to receive a turkey.

To ensure the safety of our community, participants, and staff, the turkey giveaway is drive-thru only.

Introduced an Emergency Resolution
From Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez Desk - Introduced an Emergency Resolution

Today I introduced an emergency resolution memorializing the City’s opposition to the outdoor dining restrictions imposed by the recent Los Angeles County Health Office Order. My resolution was introduced for same-day approval by the Los Angeles City Council and passed 11-3 awaiting Mayor’s signature.

Closing outdoor dining is driving another fatal blow to an industry that has continued to reinvent itself in the wake of unpredictable and conflicting state and county operating guidelines.

We have a responsibility to mitigate the ripple effects of this outbreak on businesses while balancing the public’s safety and adverse impacts to our local economy. Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC) predicts that approximately 700,000 jobs in the food industry would be lost by this new proposed shutdown and that 75% of the job losses would be those earning $50,000 or less.

Yesterday, I introduced legislation in response to the recent Whiteman Airport accident in Pacoima. My motion calls for a report back on the steps necessary to close Whiteman Airport, with an environmental analysis establishing the toxic nature of Whiteman Airport’s presence and impact on the surrounding Pacoima community as well as an economic analysis for alternative uses for the site.

Whiteman Airport is owned and operated by the County of Los Angeles. The National Transportation Safety Board’s database shows fifteen aviation accidents related to the airport since 2009. Last week I visited the families who live adjacent to the airport and were directly impacted by the most recent accident that tragically claimed the life of the pilot. The families, including the children who are distance learning due to Covid 19, bore witness to this horrific event and are trying to cope with witnessing this traumatic incident. I coordinated with the Mayor’s Crisis Response Team (CRT) to assist the families and provide them with the resources they need to address their collective trauma.

This tragic accident is a reminder of the daily injury Whiteman Airport imposes on the community of Pacoima, a community that services no value from its operation, but is subject to all the negative impacts.
