Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez - Los Angeles Sanitation & Environment

This week, my office worked in partnership with the Los Angeles Sanitation & Environment to introduce the new concept plan for the Lopez Canyon Green Space near the intersection of Lopez Canyon Rd. and Paxton St.

Following the closure of the Lopez Canyon Landfill, the Bureau of Sanitation has been working to develop lands surrounding the area for recreational use. The Lopez Canyon Green Space has been in dire need of improvements, and I pushed for an increase in the budget to accommodate for these upgrades.

Two years ago, Sylmar High School Students in Steve List’s Agriculture class entered into a competition to design the concept plan. At this week’s meeting, three students’ designs were chosen and awarded with scholarships from the Bureau of Sanitation. The concept plan will include two playgrounds (5 years and under, and 5-12 years), a dog park, various seasonal plants, upgraded lighting through LADWP, drip irrigation (environmentally friendly), and much more. At this meeting, residents had a chance to give their feedback on the plans and it will be finalized in the upcoming months.

Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez - Helping The Community Safety Partnership (CSP) Program

Today I joined Mayor Eric Garcetti and Chief Michel Moore to share our continued progress and efforts to keep Angelenos safe. In 2019, crime went down in every major category in our city — including violent and property crime, and the lowest number of homicides since the 1960s. This success is due to the collaboration and partnership between law enforcement and the community.

I’m especially proud to help expand the Community Safety Partnership (CSP) program and bring it to Pacoima at the San Fernando Gardens. This community policing program will work with residents to develop youth programs, beautify the neighborhood and help with job training, counseling and other needs. In return, the CSP will help assure more positive relations and support the critical intervention work for our youth. In addition, our efforts to invest in technology and will allow more officers on our streets and help create safer neighborhoods. We’re starting the new decade in the right direction and I look forward to our continued efforts to keep our neighborhoods safe.

La Crescenta Postcard in 1905

A postcard from La Crescenta in spring of 1905:

“Dear Lil (?), I am in the loveliest place in the world and the whole country is covered with green and gold and purple. I never saw such wildflowers. Wish you were here to paint some. How happy you must be in Mansfield now that spring has come. With love, Fanny 4/3/05”

The faint image on the postcard is of the Silver Tree Inn, a huge three-story grand resort hotel that sat on the northwest corner of Foothill and Rosemont, where Foster’s Donuts is today. What was the “silver tree”? Our best guess is a large ficus, like a Morton Bay fig tree. Perhaps the tree directly across the street in front of the big blue house that is a realty office is related to the “silver tree”?

Lake View Terrace - Installation of A New Sidewalk

During my campaign for City Council in 2017, I made a promise to the Lake View Terrace community to build a sidewalk at Fenton Avenue and Tella Bella Street, an important intersection adjacent to Fenton Charter Public School. For nearly 28 years, residents have been advocating for improvements to enhance the safety of the walking path.

Today, I kept my promise and delivered in record time this long-overdue investment to our community. In two years, I secured nearly $800,000 to fund the improvements, which include the installation of a new sidewalk and retaining wall, street resurfacing, new lighting, street widening, a new road striping plan, and continental crosswalks and access ramps. These major changes will enhance the safety of students and families walking to and from school. A special thank you to the City of Los Angeles Bureau of Engineering, City of Los Angeles Bureau of Street Services, and community advocates for the support to complete this important project.

From Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez Desk

Constituents contacted my office regarding litter and illegal dumping on Commerce Avenue in Tujunga. Team Mrod helped coordinate a community cleanup with the World Mission Society Church of God and provided free supplies, tools, and dumpsters for support. Last week, 80 volunteers rang in the new year by participating in this large beautification effort and ensured this major street was cleaned.

If you are interested in organizing or participating in a community cleanup, please contact my district office at 818-485-0600.
