This week, I was proud to have been recognized by Heal the Bay with the Dorothy Green award for my dedication towards water quality protection.

Heal the Bay is an environmental nonprofit established in 1985. They are dedicated to making the coastal waters and watersheds in Los Angeles safe, healthy, and clean.

Last year I was proud to author, Assembly Bill 1832, the California Seabed Mining Prevention Act, which aimed to protect our seafloors statewide from mining of hard materials. The Act proactively safeguards our unique and diverse coastal ecosystem and it’s deep-sea marine life from harmful activity.

As Chair of Natural Resources, I remain committed to advocating for our environment for future generations.

Thank you, Heal the Bay, for this recognition and your positive contributions to preserving our coastlines.

There was no better example of a dedicated public servant than Gloria Molina, who was unapologetic in her fight to make government work and hold people accountable. A Latina that overcame the obstacles institutions and those in power too often put in her way.

Sadly poetic that her passing fell on Mother’s Day, as a matriarch and example of courageous female leadership, she didn’t “go along to get along,” she was both revered and detested for putting the people’s interests before politics. A pioneer for equity and representation, before that conversation became en vogue. She recognized Latino voices and experiences were being ignored and made it uncomfortable for those that sought to silence the community.

She was a woman that accomplished many firsts, but her resilience in doing so made it possible to ensure that she wasn’t the last.

Rest in power to la mera mera of chingonas, Gloria Molina.

Today is Mother’s Day and I would like to take a moment to thank all the Moms, Aunts, Grandmothers, and motherly figures. May you continue to inspire the next generation of leaders.
Of all the titles I’ve ever had, Mom is my favorite. I am thankful to have the greatest example to live up to. My mother’s selflessness and unconditional love gave me the confidence I need to be fearless. #HappyMothersDay!

This Mother’s Day, I am proud to spotlight community leader Maritza Monterrosa.

Maritza is a proud wife and mother of 2 amazing daughters. She is a passionate community leader dedicated towards uplifting the youth and families in the San Fernando Valley.
Since September 2006, she has proudly served as Community Representative at Noble Elementary School. For over 17 years, she has worked very closely with the families in the community to ensure the students’ needs are met. Through her role at the parent center with Noble Elementary she has focused on building a safe space for the parents, especially mothers, to seek emotional support, informational resources, educational advice.

Maritza is a mentor for mothers in the neighborhood and also teaches them how to become advocates for their students and community.

Thank you, Mrs. Monterrosa, for always being a positive role model.

Happy #FireServiceDay! Today, I was happy to join #Sylmar for their National Fire Service Day open house and community event!

The second Saturday of each May is designated “Fire Service Recognition Day”. It is a day to recognize and honor the brave men and women who serve as firefighters in our communities. I want to take a moment to thank them for their selflessness and unwavering dedication to keeping us safe.

Thank you to LAFD Fire Station #91 for providing fire safety preparedness education, which is crucial in preventing fires from happening in the first place. It is essential that we all learn and practice fire safety tips, such as checking our smoke alarms, creating a fire escape plan, and avoiding electrical and heating hazards. By educating ourselves and our communities, we can help reduce the number of fires and keep everyone safe.

A special thank you to Sylmar Neighborhood Council and all the dedicated partners for putting together this open house event in #AD43!
