Black History Month

I proudly joined as a co-author and supported ACR 18 to celebrate Black History Month. To truly celebrate this month, we must recognize the racism, discrimination, violence, systematic barriers, and, social and economic disparities experienced by the African-American Community. We must be an ally and stand for their rights. Let’s also take this month to celebrate African-American history, innovation, and contributions that shaped the landscape for both the United States and California. #BlackHistoryMonth

Illegal Dumping Located near the Intersection of

Concerned CD7 residents contacted my office regarding illegal dumping located near the intersection of Big Tujunga Canyon Road and Oro Vista Avenue. I am pleased to inform you that my staff worked closely with the Los Angeles Department of General Services to prioritize this request. Illegal dumping is not just an eyesore, it creates a public safety hazard. We installed a series of ‘No Dumping’ signs, a gate, and barriers that prevent access to prevent illegal dumping and trespassing on City property.

If you see illegal dumping in your neighborhood, report them to 311. It’s free, easy, and can be done four ways:

•Dial 311 from your phone
•Report on their website, https://myla311.lacity.org/
•Download and use the “MyLA311” app from your smartphone
•Call the Bureau of Sanitation Customer Service Center (800) 773-2489

If you have any questions, please call my Sylmar District Office at (818) 756-8409, Pacoima District Office at (818) 485-0600, or Sunland-Tujunga office at (818) 352-3287.

The Los Angeles Board of Police

The Los Angeles Board of Police Commissioners has asked the National Police Foundation (NPF) to conduct an independent assessment of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) response to the SAFE LA demonstrations that occurred throughout the city May 27 – June 7, 2020. The assessment will not succeed without the input from community members, leaders, groups, and businesses owners. Make your voices heard regarding your interactions with LAPD during the demonstrations and how you were impacted by the activities of the demonstration and the LAPD’s response.

Introduced a Motion

As part of my continued effort to invest, elevate youth voices and participation, today I introduced a motion with my colleagues Councilmember Kevin de León, Councilmember Nithya Raman, and Councilmember Mike Bonin to establish a Youth Department. I see the need to reform systems that continue to hold many youth back. 200,000 Youth in LA live in poverty, 68,000 are disconnected from school and job opportunities, and over 3,000 are experiencing homelessness. A centralized Youth Development Department focused on enrichment programs and jobs training as an early intervention strategy, will provide our most economically disadvantaged neighborhood greater access to resources that were desperately needed pre-pandemic, but worsened by academic disruption and job loss.

Abandoned Property on the 1300 Block of Eustace Street

Safer and healthier communities in my district are a priority. When notified of unsafe or abandoned properties my staff can help navigate a resolution. An example of this was the abandoned property on the 1300 block of Eustace Street. Over many years it became a problem with mounds of junk and people trespassing on the property. My team coordinated with the City’s Department of Building and Safety on an abatement order for the property. The clean-up included the removal of four impounded junk vehicles, demolition of all structures, removal of 1,194 square feet of demolished materials, and removal of 420 yards of debris. The back fence was also secured to prevent further trespassing.

This property is an example of how community members can alert my office to a problem that can be resolved by working together. If you spot a similar issue in your neighborhood or have abandoned vehicles and illegal dumping, report it to MyLA311. It’s free, easy, and can be done in four ways:

•Dial 3-1-1 from your phone
•Report on their website https://myla311.lacity.org/
•Download and use “MyLA311” app from your smartphone
•Call the Bureau of Sanitation Customer Service Center (800) 773-2498

For abandoned vehicles, please call Los Angeles Department of Transportation at (818) 374-4823.

If you have any questions or concerns about any neighborhood issues please call my Sylmar District Office at (818) 756-8409, Pacoima District Office at (818) 485-0600, or Sunland-Tujunga office at (818) 352-3287. Hosted a Valentine's Day Senior Ball

Happy #ValentinesDay! For the last three years, my office has hosted a Valentine’s Day Senior Ball, bringing together seniors from across the 7th district to enjoy great food, dance to fun music, and access important City resources. This annual event is something we all look forward to each year to connect with and honor the seniors in our community. Unfortunately due to the pandemic, we were unable to host the event this year.

Since we couldn’t celebrate in person, my team and I brought Valentine’s Day to our seniors! My staff and I delivered information for critical resources along with treats. We know this has been a difficult year for many who have remained isolated. Ensuring that we provide critical resources to this population of seniors remains a driving force in my work. I look forward to celebrating with you in person next year!

If you know any seniors or families in need of meals or groceries, please call my Sylmar District Office at (818) 756-8409, Pacoima District Office at (818) 485-0600, or Sunland-Tujunga office at (818) 352-3287.

Happy #ValentinesDay! For the last three
