I had a great time discussion with SacTown Talks on issues as it relates to poverty, homelessness and free lunches for children from working families. I can't wait for you to hear my thoughts about the work that is being done on the state level. Stay tuned for the episode to air.

Assemblymember Luz Rivas - Dr. Maria Klawe

Today is the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. I want to highlight Dr. Maria Klawe for her work and contribution to science and math and her devotion to improving K-12 science and mathematics education in California.

Dr. Maria Klawe began her tenure as Harvey Mudd College’s fifth president in 2006. A renowned computer scientist and scholar, President Klawe is the first woman to lead the College since its founding in 1955. Dr. Klawe has made significant research contributions in several areas of mathematics and computer science, including functional analysis, discrete mathematics, theoretical computer science, human-computer interaction, gender issues in information technology and interactive-multimedia for mathematics education. Her current research focuses on discrete mathematics.

Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez - Fast Response Vehicle (FRV) Program

Today I was happy to join Mayor Eric Garcetti and Los Angeles Fire Department Chief Ralph Terrazas to celebrate the expansion of the Fast Response Vehicle (FRV) program, an innovative solution to pre-deploy resources into our neighborhoods. These vehicles cut down response times, help firefighters provide rapid treatment for critical patients and serve as modified brush patrol vehicles. FRVs have been first on scene at multiple fire incidents and minimized fire damage as a result. Within the last three years, our district has experienced three of the City’s largest wildfires and I am proud to host a Fast Response Vehicle at 91s in Sylmar, which is the largest service area in Los Angeles at EIGHT SQUARE MILES. The expansion of this program is a win for our community.

Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez - February as African American Heritage Month

In the City of Los Angeles, and across the nation, we recognize February as African American Heritage Month. This year’s theme is “African American and the Vote,” honoring the historic 1965 Voting Rights Act, which helped to overcome legal barriers that prevented African Americans from exercising their right to vote. Yesterday, I attended a service at the First AME (African Methodist Episcopal) Church and witnessed the unveiling of the US Postal Service’s 43rd stamp in the Black Heritage Stamp Series recognizing journalist Gwendolyn L. Ifill. Join me in celebrating the amazing contribution African Americans have made to the culture, economy, and history of Los Angeles and our nation – not only in February – but all year long.

Assemblymember Luz Rivas - Cleanup at Paxton and Bradley

The homeless encampment at Paxton and Bradley has been a growing concern for our community. Until today, the State has not conducted any cleanup or debris removal at this location for the last six months due to requests from service and legal assistance providers.

Due to the increase in complaints, I have been working with state agencies and local stakeholders to help facilitate communication to service this area. As a result of these discussions, a debris removal has been conducted by CalTrans today.

We look forward to continuing to partner with our colleagues at the City and County to continue to coordinate services and future cleanups.

The individuals sheltering at this location need all the assistance and compassion we can provide.

Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez - Operation Bright SPOT

Great news! This week, Operation Bright SPOT (Strategic Partnership Outfoxing Trash) brought it’s services to Pacoima. The Operation Bright Spot team focused on Glenoaks Boulevard from Paxton Street to Van Nuys Boulevard. The team repainted existing red curbs, removed gum off sidewalks, power washed sidewalks, picked up illegal dumping and conducted weed abatement. These efforts are to ensure our community stays clean and beautiful in the 7th Council District. See a business corridor in need of cleaning? Call my district office at 818-485-0600.
