#AD43 is home to a vibrant and hardy equestrian community and is one of the few remaining residential areas in the City of Los Angeles that has private homes zoned for horse keeping.

Each year, I recognize an outstanding equestrian advocate from our district. Please help me identify a nominee for the 2023 Equestrian Advocate and Horse of the Year.

Please submit your nomination by June 9th at: https://a43.asmdc.org/equestrian-advocate-and-horse-year.

We celebrate English Beat Day!

It is not often we have the opportunity to celebrate music and musicians that have a mission for positive empowerment, racial inclusivity, and unity in Council Chambers.
Dave Wakeling, vocalist and guitarist of English Beat, has been a Los Angeles resident for over 35 years. He has continued to keep The Beat alive and strong as he tours the world. Dave has shown appreciation for the City’s cutting-edge civic policy and he lives up to the ska music Two Tone ideal of tolerance and inclusion.

Happy English Beat Day!

Congratulations to the Bionic Lizards from Robert H. Lewis High School in #SunValley for winning the regional and LAUSD championship!

After their win, the Bionic Lizards headed to Texas to compete in its first Tech Challenge World Championship against 192 other teams. The Bionic Lizards were one of the eight groups who received the Judge’s Choice Award.

As we applaud the incredible achievement of these Robotics Champions, let us also recognize their remarkable teachers and mentors, including their coach, Dr. Holcomb, who believed in them and provided guidance along the way. Their contributions have been instrumental in nurturing and empowering these bright young minds to unlock their full potential.
I am proud of the students from Robert H. Lewis High School. Their triumphant win serves as an inspiration to all of the students in #AD43, reminding us that with determination and self confidence, there are no limits to what we can achieve.

Congratulations to the Pioneer Woman of the Year from the Seventh District, Kim Olsen!

The Pioneer Women Awards honor individuals advocating for gender equality and empowering women and girls in Los Angeles. Los Angeles Civil + Human Rights and Equity Department hosted a breakfast and awards ceremony to celebrate the 33rd Pioneer Women Awards under the theme “Locking Arms to Solve Homelessness.”

I express my sincere gratitude for the opportunity to honor Kim Olsen. Her invaluable contributions and partnership have been instrumental in addressing homelessness in CD7. As Executive Director of West Valley Homes Yes (WVHY), Kim focuses on supporting better housing, health outcomes, and overall well-being for our homeless neighbors.

Kim Olsen and WVHY have established a comprehensive process aimed at providing support and housing solutions for those living in RVs while also ensuring the removal of these vehicles from city streets.

Thanks to her innovative process, we are progressing towards implementing a comprehensive approach and establishing a blueprint that will aid individuals living in vehicles throughout the entire city.

We held a ribbon cutting to celebrate the completion of the eco-forward Lopez Canyon Trailhead.

My team and I worked in partnership with LASAN, Public Works, and residents, to develop a plan and reimagine buffer lands surrounding the Lopez Canyon Landfill into open space for public use.
The Lopez Canyon project features 1.5 miles of hiking and equestrian trails, water fountains, horse waterers, a designated horse trailer parking lot, dog waste stations, ADA picnic tables, ADA parking, and a bioswale.

The unveiling ceremony included a tour of the stormwater bioswale system. This bioswale feature is designed to collect most of the runoff from the parking lot and picnic area and to help reduce runoff pollution going to oceans while recharging the groundwater.

Additionally, the trail features drought-tolerant native vegetation landscaping and new mile markers and signage.

I want to thank Mayor Karen Bass for announcing her support for another fire station in #Sylmar.

Many community members have seen the damage that wildfires have had in Sylmar. A second fire station will improve our community’s response time, making the difference between life and death.

Special thanks to the Sylmar Neighborhood Council for hosting National Fire Service Day to give tribute to our brave firefighters.
