Tujunga - 1920 Old Hardin House

A little over a century ago, William Ellsworth Smythe, a journalist and founder of the Little Landers, a social movement that espoused the principle of self-sufficiency through farming, teamed up with Glendale real estate developer Marshall Hartranft to establish a Little Landers colony at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains in Tujunga. However, as Hadley Meares chronicled in a 2013 feature for KCET, the cooperative agrarian society Smythe envisioned failed to materialize, in no small part because Tujunga’s soil turned out to yield more rocks than crops.

Although the Little Landers’ utopian experiment didn’t pan out, remnants of the settlement live on in the numerous structures sprinkled throughout Tujunga built with the aforementioned field stones, including this rocky residence at 10226 Marcus Avenue now on the market.

Known as the Hardin House, it was erected circa 1920 by Floyd Barnes Hardin, a Methodist preacher, and, per its entry in the Los Angeles Historic Resources Inventory, may have been one of the first schoolhouses in the area.

While the 1,734-square-foot home’s arroyo-stone exterior looks as old as the surrounding hills, its insides are a different story, with a stone fireplace in the living room seemingly the only original element extant. Along with three bedrooms and two bathrooms, it’s got a detached two-car carport and sits on an 8,392-square-foot lot. Last sold in 2008 for $376,000, the property is listed with Mike Babakhanyan and Martin Lazarian of JohnHart Real Estate at an asking price of $629,000.

Assemblymember Luz Rivas - Thanks to Volunteers

Thank you to all the volunteers who came out and participated in the 2020 Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count last night. This Count is important because it helps us better understand homelessness in our region and direct resources where they’re needed most.

This count runs until January 23rd and if you would like volunteer, you can still do so by signing up at TheyCountWillYou.org

Thank you to all the volunteers who

Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez - Detention Center in LA

Today I joined Council President Nury Martinez and Councilmember Herb J. Wesson, Jr. to send a clear message to private companies operating detention centers — Los Angeles will not stand idly by while these companies profit from separating families. We will not be complicit in supporting organizations that violate human rights. Today’s unanimous Council action instructs City staff and the City Attorney to draft an Interim Control Ordinance to temporarily ban private detention centers. As the daughter of Mexican immigrants, I am proud to stand in solidarity against the cruel and inhumane conditions at these centers.

Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez - First Public Safety Committee Meeting

I was proud to kick off 2020 with our first Public Safety Committee meeting of the year. We were joined today by our LAPD Chief of Police Michel Moore to review the 2019 Crime Statistics and Initiatives. In 2019, crime went down in every major category in our city — including violent and property crime, and the lowest number of homicides since the 1960s. This progress is due to the collaboration and partnership between law enforcement and the community.

Having transparency, accountability, and the ability to measure our effectiveness is of great importance to the public and an oversight role I take seriously as Chair. We’re starting the new decade in the right direction and I look forward to our continued efforts to keep our neighborhoods safe.

Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez - Safety Improvement

On January 23, I will be hosting a community meeting regarding the upcoming safety improvement projects along the Pacoima Wash. Historically, there has been a tremendous need to enhance infrastructure along the Pacoima Wash to ensure the safety of the public, especially of children, and to improve accessibility for pedestrians and bicyclists. I am happy to share that I have secured funding to design a bridge that will span the Pacoima Wash at Telfair Avenue. Since I took office in July 2017, it has been my priority to enhance safety, increase connectivity, and beautify the environment around the Pacoima Wash.

To learn more about Telfair Bridge Project and improvement projects we have planned along the Pacoima Wash attend the community meeting. Community engagement and input is critical in helping us secure additional funding for the construction of this project and in ensuring that the project reflects the needs of the community.

When: Thursday, January 23rd

Time: 6-8 pm

Where: Ritchie Valens Park

For additional questions, please contact my office at 213-473-7007.

Assemblymember Luz Rivas - Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Civil rights leader, minister and recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his courageous leadership forever changed the face of America. He energized the poor and the disenfranchised, worked to end war, and gave people the courage to claim their rightful share of America.

His impact on America is extraordinary. Explicit discrimination has been outlawed and African Americans are now more visible in politics, the media and in corporate boardrooms across the nation. Their inclusion in such areas left much to be desired before Dr. King’s work. That said, today’s world finds much work still to be done on all of Dr. King’s “three evils” of racial prejudice, poverty, and war.

Today, we honor #MLK and his legacy as we keep fighting for a more just world.
