The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) Trains Volunteers

The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) trains volunteers as part of their Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program and prepares them for hazards that may impact their area, including basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. I am proud to announce that a CERT class is being offered for our community because it will take all of us working together to take care of each other in the event of an emergency. The CERT Program is a 7-week program, you must attend all the classes in order to be certified. The program meets once a week on Thursday evenings from 6:00 to 8:30 PM and begins Thursday, September 1, 2022, and will end Thursday, October 13, 2022.

If you are interested in signing up for the upcoming CERT training, please click here to register: visit https://www.eventbrite.com/…/lafd-cert-tujunga-tickets…

I am proud to share that my office partnered with the Mission and Foothill Stations to distribute backpacks and school supplies to over 200 youth involved in LAPD’s Mission and Foothill Stations’ Cadets and Junior Cadets program.

The Cadet Program is designed to offer youth an opportunity to develop skills that will help them throughout their lives while working with one of the finest law enforcement agencies in the country. The program is offered at each of the 21 community police stations across the city, as well as at seven specialized divisions.

California State Budget

This year, through the California State Budget, I was able to secure $17.5 million for projects to benefit #AD39.
$10 million will be allocated to Los Angeles Mission College for the construction of a new biotechnology campus that will be used to provide career pathways for future students not only from our district but across the entire region.

The STEM Institute aims to provide opportunities for students and inspire underrepresented students to pursue degree pathways in STEM fields, and close the historic equity gaps that have persisted in those fields and careers.
A special thank you to the staff at Los Angeles Mission College for working with my staff to make this possible. I also want to express my appreciation to Code.org, DIY Girls, and the Los Angeles Community College District, for their involvement in the announcement of this historic funding!

Lastly, I want to thank the Mariachi Master Apprentice Program- Mariachi Tesoro & Los Tesoritos for the live music and the community members who celebrated this day with us by providing resource booths to community members: Pacoima Beautiful, Hope of the Valley, MEND/Hope and Care Program, El Nido Family Center, UCLA Center for Community College Partnerships, Volunteers of America, Goodwill Southern California, ICON Community Development, Northeast Valley Health Corporation, Plaza Comunitaria Sinaloa, Champions In Service, TreePeople, Truconnect, City of San Fernando, Government, CHIRLA, Tia Chucha’s Centro Cultural & Bookstore, Los Angeles County Child Support Services Department, Dignity Health – Northridge Hospital Medical Center, Women’s Care Cottage, Alliance for a Better Community, and el Projecto del Barrio.

From Friday, August 12 at 11pm to Saturday, August 13 at 6am, Caltrans District 7 will be completing paving work on the 210 freeway in the San Fernando Valley.

Overhead sign structures, traffic loop detectors, center median barrier, and the guardrail system are also being upgraded by this project.

The work on I-210 is part of a $135.5 million project replacing all lanes of I-210 with new pavement from Wheatland Ave to I-5. This project is funded by Senate Bill 1 (SB 1), the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017.

In the last few years, I have been working on measures to protect people from extreme heat.
I remember as a young girl in the district, going on trips to the mall with my mom in the hot summer months to escape the weather. Today, that is still a reality for many people in #AD39.

Thank you to Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara, Senator Henry Stern, Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia, Assemblywoman Cristina Garcia, and Assemblymember Dr. Joaquin Arambula for joining me to address how we are tackling extreme heat in California.

It will only continue to get hotter, but with our package, hopefully we can keep things cool.

I am deeply disturbed by reports of casualties, including two Armenian soldiers, in Nagorno-Karabakh, also known as Artsakh – the result of Azerbaijan’s direct violation of its ceasefire agreement with Armenia. This is hardly the first time Azerbaijan has attacked Armenian forces unprovoked, and unless the United States takes immediate action to hold the Aliyev regime accountable, it will not be the last. It is imperative the State Department use all of its diplomatic channels and levers to reduce tensions and show America’s unwavering support for Armenian sovereignty and the territorial integrity of Artsakh.

In this year’s national defense funding legislation and for years past, I have repeatedly called for the immediate release of all Armenian prisoners of war and captured civilians, tens of millions in humanitarian aid and economic assistance for Artsakh, a full prohibition on U.S. security assistance to Azerbaijan, and renewed American engagement through the OSCE Minsk Group to reinvigorate the peace process. Each of these actions is critical to defending the Armenian people, and sending a resolute message that America can and will defend democracy around the world.

I will always stand with the people of Armenia and Artsakh.

I commend President Biden, our Intelligence Community, military, and all those who contributed to bringing Ayman al-Zawahiri, the leader of al-Qaeda, to justice. Ever since I was appointed to the House Intelligence Committee more than a decade ago, I made it a priority to focus on bringing the top leaders of al-Qaeda to justice, requesting frequent briefings on their location, even when the trail went cold.

It has long been clear that locating al-Zawahiri was one of the most challenging targets we faced, and the American people should be proud of the talented individuals whose tireless work allowed us to take one of the most destructive and vicious terrorists in history off the battlefield, and to do so without civilian casualties. The Taliban will have to answer for al-Zawahiri’s presence in Kabul, after assuring the world they would not give safe haven to al-Qaeda terrorists.

Al-Zawahiri was proudly responsible for the deaths of thousands of Americans, and the world is a safer place today without him. The message is clear to those who would attack America – we will be relentless in bringing you to justice.

I commend President Biden, our Intelligence Community,

Visited Hungry Gardens Urban Farm in the Seventh Council District

I recently visited Hungry Gardens Urban Farm in the Seventh Council District, a local farm in La Tuna Canyon that grows heirloom produce, mushrooms, and florals. Founded by Joni Albers, in 2020. The farm is open monthly for “Garden Days” to teach the public about what they do and share their knowledge with others. Additionally, the garden provides produce to many restaurants across Los Angeles.

Operation Bright S.P.O.T. was in Tujunga to Remove Overgrown Tree Branches

Operation Bright S.P.O.T. was in Tujunga to remove overgrown tree branches that my staff identified during a community drive. My staff identified the branches were blocking vital signage for vehicles exiting the 210 freeway off-ramp onto Honolulu Ave to Tujunga Canyon Blvd. The overgrown trees impaired the drivers from seeing the immediate speed change and the school zone signs. Working together, we can keep our communities clean.
Don’t wait for illegal dumping or debris in your neighborhood to become a nuisance. Report it to our city crew via 3-1-1. If you have a corridor in mind that may benefit from Operation Bright S.P.O.T., please contact my Pacoima office at (818) 485-0600, Sylmar office at (818) 756-8409, or Sunland-Tujunga office at (818) 352-3287.
