Congratulations to DIY Girls on the successful grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony in #SanFernando!

The mission of DIY Girls is to improve girls’ interest and long-term success in technology, engineering, and manufacturing through creative educational experiences and mentor connections. It’s wonderful to see the impact their mission and work has had on young girls in the San Fernando Valley over the last decade.

Thank you for inviting my team and community leaders to commemorate this incredible milestone.

A special thank you to all dedicated partners for putting together this celebration and the DIY Girls team for taking the initiative to develop our next generation of STEM leaders in #AD43!

I held a press conference with LAPD Chief Moore and LAFD Chief Crowley as part of our efforts to stop illegal fireworks in advance of the 3rd Annual Anonymous Fireworks Buyback event on Saturday (July 1).

In 2021, I launched the city’s first Anonymous Fireworks Buyback Program. And in the first two years, more than a half-ton of fireworks were voluntarily collected.
This year we will remove even more illegal fireworks off the streets to reduce the risk of injury or fire in our communities.

Join us tomorrow for the Anonymous Fireworks Buyback Program and receive a gift card while supplies last.

I am pleased to showcase the new street redesign on Foothill Blvd. between Filbert St. and De Garmo Ave., including bollards and protected bike lanes.

This new multi-modal restriping design improves safety on Foothill Blvd. for bicyclists, pedestrians, motorists, and equestrians by creating protected bike lanes. I was happy to see residents making full use of it in the last few weeks and look forward to it being part of our larger redesign of the entire Foothill corridor.

I plan to unveil the additional traffic safety and community improvements throughout the district in the coming months.

As a student at San Fernando High School, I participated in Student Day in Government, which was Mayor Tom Bradley’s effort to introduce youth to local government from all parts of our city. That early introduction ignited my passion for City service and fueled my work for investments in youth to help them achieve their full potential.

To provide this opportunity for today’s youth, I introduced legislation that the City Council approved to create the Olivia Mitchell Youth Council. The youth council will include two youth representatives between the ages of 16-25 from each council district.

Applications for the Second Cohort of the Olivia Mitchell Youth Council are open through July 23rd.

This year-long paid program allows young people to learn the inner workings of the City of Los Angeles, work alongside city department staff, and advise elected officials on solutions to solve issues within their communities.

When we invest in youth, we invest in a greater Los Angeles.
