Supporting our Local Businesses and Entrepreneurs

The pandemic has disproportionately impacted our local small businesses. I visited some of our businesses and organizations in Pacoima. Supporting our local businesses and entrepreneurs isn’t new for me. I have been working to reform systems that have suppressed their entry into our economy for nearly a decade. Let’s continue supporting our local businesses as they recover from the pandemic.

Calling for the Closure of the Whiteman Airport

As part of my commitment to creating a safer and healthier environment in the 7th Council District, I partnered with Pacoima Beautiful. We are calling for the closure of the Whiteman Airport. The residents of the Northeast Valley deserve the same considerations as communities in Santa Monica, and I call on the County to evaluate alternative uses for the property to provide economic opportunity, housing, and open space for this community. It’s long past due to deliver substantial economic investment and environmental justice for a community that has borne the burden and no benefit from airport operations.

Efforts to Address Homelessness

Another success in my efforts to address homelessness in the 7th District. At Brand Park, 13 unhoused individuals said “Yes!” to housing. Working closely with Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority and City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, we led with consistent outreach and identified appropriate housing solutions for these individuals and families.

After the individuals were moved to housing, 8,250 lbs of bulky items and waste were removed from the park. Repairs will be made to park lighting, and new signs will be installed to replace the park hour signs that were previously torn down.

This is how we lead by example here in the 7th Council District, just as we did at Paxton and Bradley and recently at the Osborne offramp Lot /210 FWY.

Mexican Independence with Our Equestrian Community

Our Sylmar community recently came together to celebrate Mexican Independence with our equestrian community. We celebrated the rich cultural diversity that we have in the City of Los Angeles and the 7th District. I’m proud to represent a district with such diversity that brings together so many members of our community to celebrate the love of our animals and community.

Let’s all continue to embrace and learn from one another and appreciate the rich contributions of every culture. Enjoy #LatinoHeritageMonth!

Gold Star Mothers Day

#GoldStarMothersDay is observed in the United States on the last Sunday of September each year. It is a day for people to recognize and honor those who have lost a son or daughter while serving the United States Armed Forces.
I ask us all to take a moment today to pause and remember the mother and the family behind the person that sacrificed all for our country.
