Today, our community and the City of San Fernando united to pay tribute to Cindy Montañez by renaming the Pacoima Wash Natural Park in her honor. She’s been an unwavering advocate for our community, passionately championing environmental causes and shattering glass ceilings.

Montañez is the youngest woman to serve as a Councilmember for the City of San Fernando at 25 and Assemblymember for our community at 28. After serving in the Legislature, she has continued fighting for environmental justice by transitioning LADWP to a cleaner and sustainable water supply and becoming the first Latina ever to serve as a CEO for an environmental organization (TreePeople).

Her contributions to our community and state are endless. Thank you Councilmember Montañez for your leadership and commitment!

In celebration of our diverse Latino culture and its influence in Los Angeles, we are kicking off Latino Heritage Month with our annual commemoration of El Grito – The moment that sparked a revolution for Mexico to fight for its independence. Our theme this year is “SOMOS LA” is about coming together as one community to honor our roots, our contribution and the renaissance of Latino culture in mainstream media. 🎉

Councilwoman Yaroslavsky and I had the privilege of recognizing mother and advocate, Paulinda Schimmel Babbini. Paulinda lost her daughter, Robin Babbini, at the age of 20 to ovarian cancer. As a result, Paulinda founded The Ovarian Cancer Circle organization, where she has become a strong leader in ovarian cancer awareness and education for women throughout the City of Los Angeles.

Thank you Ovarian Cancer Circle for your efforts as women of all races and economic backgrounds deserve the right to be tested for this disease. It is in that spirit that we declare September as the official Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month for the City of Los Angeles to continue to uplift these stories and the importance of ovarian cancer awareness.

My office was contacted by the Whitehawk Ranch HOA in Sylmar seeking assistance because a 10-foot piece of fencing along the stormwater conveyance system on Herron Street and Janna Way was vandalized.

My team acted quickly and coordinated with the Department of LA Sanitation and Clean Water North Conveyance Division to restore the fence and secure the access. Keeping our community clean and safe is a shared responsibility. The sooner you report areas of concern the sooner we can work together to resolve them. Abandoned RV’s continue to be a challenge throughout Los Angeles that I take very seriously. My team and I removed this motor-home located on the 10000 Block of Wealtha Ave. in the Shadow Hills Community.

It’s important to report locations by contacting LADOT at 1-800-ABANDON (222-6366) Monday-Friday 8 AM-5 PM, or submit the vehicle and location electronically at https://ladot.lacity.org. You may also report the abandoned vehicle using the city’s 311 system. When you call my office, please provide us with the date you first reported it with the Service Request number, as this aids us in resolving these locations.
