In honor of Native American Heritage Month, we illuminated City Hall tonight in orange to raise awareness of the “Every Child Matters” movement, which recognizes the missing Native American children at residential boarding schools. Throughout the U.S. in the 19th and 20th centuries, Native children were forcibly sent to boarding schools hundreds of miles away from their traditional home to assimilate to American culture. In these schools, children were starved, abused, and deprived from practicing their traditions. These cruel acts against the Native American community separated countless families and left long lasting wounds in the community. This is an important moment to recognize the victims and survivors of this event and demand justice for the lives lost at these boarding schools. 🧡

🚲 Mark Your calendar for the 𝑴𝒐𝒗𝒆 𝒀𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝑾𝒂𝒚 event on Saturday, Sᴇᴘᴛᴇᴍʙᴇʀ 23, 2023, as we “gear up” to enjoy open streets together in San Fernando, Pacoima, and Sylmar, funded by a half-a-million dollar Metro grant we secured in partnership with the City of San Fernando. The festival encourages all participants to explore a crossover of the City of Los Angeles and the City of San Fernando streets through biking, walking, and rolling! There will be street closures for the community to enjoy active transportation, various event hubs, activations, and you can roll through the neighborhoods, including Pacoima and Sylmar, via the open roads! Save the date for this exciting festival. All ages and abilities are encouraged to participate in this car-free experience. For more information, please visit www.moveyourwayla.com or follow the Instagram page @moveyourwayla.

With a citywide increase in RV encampments, I spearheaded the effort in my district in collaboration with West Valley Homes Yes to accelerate removal and disposition of RV encampments and placing individuals into housing. This initiative was adopted by the City Council as the model of how we lead this work citywide, not by simply relocating the problems to other neighborhoods. Our most recent operation in Pacoima, near Desmond St. and Bradley Ave., resulted in 7 vehicles being disposed of and 7 individuals finding housing.

This demonstrates the continued success of my program that provides crucial services to those seeking housing while addressing the challenge of RV dwellings and the problems associated with them. Since commencing this work in my district, we have placed 83 individuals into housing and disposed of 46 recreational vehicles, with 11 more awaiting disposition.

It is important to report vehicle dwellings like these to any of our district offices or emailing details to Councilmember.Rodriguez@lacity.org so we can begin the work of aiding individuals with resources and working to remove these encampments to make our communities cleaner and safer for everyone.

Did you know that a car is considered “abandoned” after sitting for more than 72 hours? My team and I helped remove this abandoned vehicle that had been sitting for over two-weeks on the 14000 block of Herron Street in Sylmar.

It’s important to report these locations by contacting LADOT at 1-800-ABANDON (222-6366) Monday-Friday 8 AM-5 PM, or submit the vehicle and location electronically at https://ladot.lacity.org. You may also report the abandoned vehicle using the city’s 311 system. When you call my office, please provide us with the date you first reported it with the Service Request number, as this aids us in resolving these locations.

Extreme heat is the deadliest extreme weather occurrence. Last year, I passed #AB2238, establishing the development of a statewide heat ranking system. The Administration is on track to implement the system by the January 2025 deadline.
