Repair Horse Trails in Hansen Dam

Due to the recent rains, various portions of the horse trails in Hansen Dam had become rutted. Los Angeles Fire Department was called to free a horse that got caught in one of the ruts along the trail. The rider alerted my office following the incident, and we worked closely with the Department of Recreation and Parks maintenance staff at Hansen Dam to quickly repair the trails.

If you see issues with horse trails or any other issues in our parks, please my Pacoima office at (818) 485-0600, Sylmar office at (818) 756-8409, or Sunland-Tujunga office at (818) 352-3287.

In partnership with Los Angeles Sanitation & Environment, Los Angeles Department of Water & Power, City Plants, and TreePeople, we provided 125 free fruit and shade trees along with 115 bags of compost and mulch.

Planting trees in your yard is an easy way to save energy and cool your home. City Plants is still offering tree planting and delivery services. If you qualify and if there is space for a tree, City Plants will send out an inspector and certified arborist to select the best location and tree species to plant in your parkway. Residents must be committed to watering the trees until established, approximately 3-5 years.

Sun Valley Area Neighborhood Council Community Clean-Up

This weekend, my team participated in the Sun Valley Area Neighborhood Council community clean-up!
My office awarded certificates to over 20 volunteers from Poly High School who worked to remove trash from San Fernando Road in Sun Valley.

As Black History Month comes to an end, I would like to recognize StylesVille Beauty & Barber Shop in Pacoima, the oldest black-owned barbershop in the San Fernando Valley, founded in 1957.

StylesVille is operated by Greg Carter Fawcett who is a third-generation member of the Carter Family that purchased the current location in the 1970s.

For decades, the barbershop has served as an integral part of our community and is well known for its fresh haircuts.

Tremendous thanks to the Carter family for their many contributions to AD-39!

Coordinated an Abatement Order for Unsafe Abandoned Property

A concerned Pacoima resident contacted my office regarding an unsafe abandoned property. The house presented a public safety hazard. Leading the effort with LAPD, Los Angeles Building and Safety, and the City Attorney’s Office we coordinated an abatement order for the property. This effort to deploy nuisance abatement strategies is part of my continued investments in creating greater public safety results in our neighborhoods.

If you spot a similar issue in your neighborhood or have abandoned vehicles and illegal dumping, report it to MyLA311. For additional services, please call my Pacoima office at (818) 485-0600, Sylmar office at (818) 756-8409, or Sunland-Tujunga office at (818) 352-3287.

Anniversary of Franklin D. Roosevelt Signing Executive Order 9066

19th February, 2022 marked the anniversary of Franklin D. Roosevelt signing Executive Order 9066 in 1942, requiring the internment of all Americans of Japanese ancestry. The protected oaks of the Tuna Canyon Detention Center Station, now a cultural historic landmark here in the City of LA, commemorate the history of people unjustly interned there. From 1941 to 1943, more than 2,000 individuals of Japanese, German, and Italian origin were imprisoned at the Tuna Canyon Detention Station before most were transferred to other internment camps.

This site is an important piece of our history in the Northeast San Fernando Valley and a timely reminder to ensure that this violation of civil rights never happens again.

I have been a persistent voice to hold Caltrans HQ accountable for our community and I’m proud to announce we’ve secured $8 million from the Clean California Initiative for the Northeast San Fernando Valley. The funding will be used for beautifying and revitalizing public spaces on Caltrans facilities and will expand on the work we began with them at locations such as the lot at Foothill. In addition, the projects are expected to generate 3,600 jobs as part of the multi-year initiative by Caltrans. Construction will begin April 2022 and my team will keep you informed of progress.

As Chair of the Assembly Committee on Natural Resources, I am committed to taking strong actions to protect California and our environment from the effects of climate change.

That’s why I have introduced two bills that focus on addressing Extreme Heat and its deadly effects. We cannot afford continued inaction on one of the deadliest weather-related events that is worsening due to Climate Change.
Thank you to the Los Angeles Times for spotlighting both bills in this story!
