There have been 13 airplane crashes near Pacoima’s Whiteman Airport in the last decade.

In November 2020, an airplane crashed just short of Whiteman Airport in a residential neighborhood in Pacoima killing the pilot and setting several cars ablaze. In January, a pilot barely escaped with their life after taking off from Whiteman Airport, and crashing on nearby railroad tracks in Pacoima. The plane was then destroyed by an oncoming Metrolink passenger train, which could have easily resulted in mass casualties. Just last month, another pilot lost their life in a crash just a few feet away from the busy I-210 Freeway in Sylmar.

Our community deserves to feel safe.

A safety audit is long overdue and I support U.S. Rep. Tony Cárdenas‘s request for a 30-day moratorium on non-emergency flights at Whiteman airport while a formal investigation is conducted by the FAA.

Operation Bright S.P.O.T. Team Removed the Miscellaneous DebrisOperation Bright S.P.O.T. Team Removed the Miscellaneous Debris

A concerned Pacoima resident contacted my office regarding overgrown weeds on Van Nuys Blvd. Our Operation Bright S.P.O.T. team was sent and removed the miscellaneous debris. We must work collaboratively to keep our communities clean. If you see illegal dumping or debris in your neighborhood, don’t wait for it to become a nuisance, report it to our city crew via 3-1-1. It is free, easy, and can be done four ways:

-Dial 311 from your phone
-Report on their website, https://myla311.lacity.org/
-Download and use the “MyLA311” app from your smartphone
-Call the Bureau of Sanitation Customer Service Center (800) 773-2489

Illegal Dumping Items in the 11100 block of Stranwood Avenue

During our recent community drive, my team identified illegal dumping items in the 11100 block of Stranwood Avenue in Mission Hills. My team reported this site to the Los Angeles Sanitation & Environment and the department picked up the items that were blocking the public right-of-way.

Don’t wait for illegal dumping or debris in your neighborhood to become a nuisance. Report it to our city crew via 3-1-1. New Therapeutic Mental Health Van Program at Fire Station 77New Therapeutic Mental Health Van Program at Fire Station 77

Today, we successfully launched our new Therapeutic Mental Health Van program at Fire Station 77 which will be critical to serving our San Fernando Valley Region. This model ⁣appropriately deploys trained Los Angeles County mental health workers to respond to individuals experiencing mental health crises in lieu of fire and police resources. ⁣

As a Chair of Public Safety, I led the fight to dedicate $2 million from our city budget to provide five vans staffed 24/7 across the city, including the one located in the Seventh Council District. This is just one example of how we’re leading a shift in public safety response to ensure we’re maximizing taxpayer dollars and improving service to our communities, ensuring police and firefighters can respond to calls for service they were trained to do.

Caltrans Maintenance Update Sylmar:

My office has received several reports about the massive buildup of debris on the I-210 on and off ramps on Hubbard Street. After conducting multiple meetings with Caltrans District 7 to assess the situation, I am happy to announce that Caltrans will service this area from May 16 through May 19.

Prior to the clean up, the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority will visit these encampments to provide housing and social services.

I look forward to the continuous collaboration between our local and state agencies to restore our district. These organized clean-ups are part of the $19 million in state funded improvement projects I helped secure through the Clean California Initiative.

For more information on our efforts addressing homelessness and debris removal, please watch the following video of a Town Hall I hosted with Caltrans, CHP, and local assistance providers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5nIUfAAlhM.

Second Annual Culinary Cup Competition for the Golden Chef’s HatSecond Annual Culinary Cup Competition for the Golden Chef’s Hat

Los Angeles Mission College (LAMC) hosted Los Angeles Harbor College and Los Angeles Trade-Technical College for the second annual Culinary Cup Competition for the Golden Chef’s Hat!

The goal of the Culinary Cup is to raise money for scholarships and resources for culinary arts students. The theme for this year’s competition was Sabores de Oaxaca (Tastes of Oaxaca). Savory teams were asked to use six mystery Oaxacan ingredients to prepare classic Oaxacan cuisine. Five professional judges from the culinary industry scored teams in three categories: Savory Team, Baking, and Tablescaping.

Congratulations to LAMC for winning the Golden Chefs Hat!

Great job #LAMC for hosting this year’s event! It was a successful competition and more importantly, we were able raise money for student scholarships.
