The Community Based Public Safety Collective and The Build Program held a graduation and certification ceremony for the City’s Community Intervention Workers who participated in the Project TURN Conflict-Dispute training.

I want to thank Aqeela Sherrills and Dr. Aquil Basheer, and many others for their leadership in this training, and I was proud to fight for the resources to provide this training.

Her history and service to the 6th District will ensure that residents have representation that understands and meets their needs. I look forward to working with her and fighting for more investments that serve the residents of the Valley.

Last year, I had the privilege of securing $10 million from the California state budget for the construction and operation of a Biotechnology STEM Hub at Los Angeles Mission College (LAMC) to increase career pathways in STEM for the San Fernando Valley. This year, U.S. Rep. Tony Cárdenas secured an additional $2 million that will allow LAMC to develop several training programs in allied health professions.

The funding empowers non-English speaking foreign-born STEM workers, and individuals new to STEM, by creating a comprehensive program. With a focus on expanding Allied Health offerings, including vocational nurse phlebotomy, cardiovascular technician, and medical assistant training, our community’s workforce demands will be met.
These significant funding milestones symbolize a shared commitment to empowering the next generation of STEM leaders from this community.
