Support Our Local Businesses, Support Our Community

Today I visited some of our local restaurants in our district. During the pandemic and in recovery I have continued to fight for resources that provide critical relief for these small businesses. Whether you’re looking for unique, one-of-a-kind, restaurants, shops, or professional services, the Seventh Council District has A LOT to offer! Remember when you support our local businesses, you are supporting our community.

If you are a business owner, the LA Business Portal provides the information you need to plan, start, manage, and grow your business. To learn more visit https://business.lacity.org.

Congratulations Irene Tovar

Congratulations to #AD39 constituent, Irene Tovar, for receiving her honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from California State University, Northridge (CSUN)!

Ms. Tovar earned a bachelor’s degree in social science from CSUN in 1969. While attending the university, she noticed the dropout rate for Latino students was disproportionately high. To address this issue, she created an organization to support Latinos attending the university. This organization later grew into the Latin American Civic Association, which administered the first head start program in the San Fernando Valley.

Her advocacy caught the attention of then Governor Jerry Brown who appointed her to the State Personnel Board where she became the first Mexican-American and person of color on the board. Ms. Tovar was instrumental in implementing policies and procedures that removed artificial barriers in the California Civil Service System, including differential pay and affirmative action.

In addition to her civic work, Ms. Tovar played a key role in founding Los Angeles Mission College (LAMC). She serves on LAMC’s advisory board and sits on the CSUN Commission on Diversity and Inclusion. Recently, she served on the University Library advisory group.

Ms. Tovar has blazed an incredible trail and is a true champion for the San Fernando Valley.
Ms Tovar, it is a pleasure to know you and represent you!

Congratulations to #AD39 constituent, Irene Tovar, for

Removing dead trees and replanting to rebuild our tree canopy is work I’ve been leading with the Urban Forestry Division since taking office in 2017. It’s why I secured funding to eliminate the backlog of requests for tree trimming, dead trees, and stump removal across the Seventh Council District. Last weekend, UFD was in Pacoima where the crew trimmed 13 trees and removed one stump that posed a safety danger in Pacoima.
To learn more about our efforts in maintaining our urban canopy, please call my Pacoima office at (818) 485-0600, Sylmar office at (818) 756-8409, or Sunland-Tujunga office at (818) 352-3287.

Creating Safer Streets in the Seventh Council DistrictCreating Safer Streets in the Seventh Council District

Creating safer streets in the Seventh Council District for all users of the road has been a top priority. My team worked with LADOT Official on safety improvements for Foothill Boulevard from Sherman Grove Avenue to Apperson Street. Last year, LADOT selected this stretch as a Vision Zero ‘Priority Corridor’ due to the high number of traffic fatalities and serious injuries between 2009 and 2019. This provides additional funding and design improvements to improve traffic safety.

These improvements include:

•13 high visibility continental crosswalks at minor intersections, and green conflict zone striping to the existing bike lanes.
•Redesign including new striping and reflective bollards to simplify traffic flow through the complex intersection at Foothill Boulevard, Greenburn Avenue, and Summitrose Street.
•A left turn restriction from a busy driveway was implemented to restrict cross-traffic left turns and improve queueing
•Signal upgrades and installations are planned to include protected left-turns and flashing beacons for crosswalks and emergency services.

To make suggestions for future improvements in this area, please go to https://ladotlivablestreets.org/projects/foothill-safety. For additional information on this project, contact my Sunland-Tujunga field office at (818) 352-3287.

I continue to work closely with our LAPD Mission and Foothill divisions to develop strategies that address many of the unique concerns in our diverse community and make the most of our limited city resources.

Today, our LAPD Mounted Unit continues to patrol Hansen Dam, an area that is located in a high fire severity zone and difficult to access by car. If you see something, feel free to talk to the LAPD Mounted Unit. This type of collaboration strengthens the relationship between the community and LAPD.

If you need to file a police report, please contact our LAPD Foothill or Mission Division. My office is also here to help you connect with LAPD, please contact my Pacoima office at (818) 485-0600, Sylmar office at (818) 756-8409, or Sunland-Tujunga office at (818) 352-3287.

Thank you to the City of San Fernando, Government, Senator Bob Hertzberg, TreePeople, and volunteers for coming out to help beautify our green space at the Pacoima Wash Natural Park. With the assistance of our volunteers, we were able to remove trash, dead branches, graffiti, and clear the pedestrian trail to ensure the safety of residents.
As Chair of Natural Resources, I am committed to preserving the beauty of our natural parks through community advocacy and volunteer efforts. Thank you again to all our helpers for keeping our community clean.
