It was a great morning giving away free shade and fruit trees in partnership with Los Angeles Department of Water & Power, Los Angeles Sanitation & Environment, City Plants, and LA Conservation Corps. We provided 50 fruit and 50 shade trees along with 100 bags of compost and mulch.

If you missed our tree giveaway, CityPlants is offering free planting and delivery services. If you qualify and there is space for a tree, City Plants will send out an inspector and certified arborist to select the best location and tree species to plant in your parkway. Residents must be committed to watering the trees until established, approximately 3-5 years. For more information, please visit https://www.cityplants.org/

Removing dead trees and replanting to rebuild our tree canopy is work I’ve been leading for the last four years. Operation Bright S.P.O.T. was active in removing stumps on Noble Avenue and Los Olivos Street in Mission Hills. Stump removals help create a safe and accessible path for all sidewalk users.

If you have a location in mind that may benefit from Operation Bright S.P.O.T. please call my Pacoima office at (818) 485-0600, Sylmar office at (818) 756-8409, or Sunland-Tujunga office at (818) 352-3287.

Since taking office, I have worked closely with the City of Los Angeles Bureau of Street Services (BSS) to invest in neighborhood infrastructure. BSS applied a slurry seal and re-designed the crosswalk on Sayre Street between San Fernando Road and Ralston Avenue in Sylmar. Applying a slurry seal is a cost-effective, one-day technique that improves the existing street condition, adding another 5-7 years to the life expectancy of the asphalt. If you would like more information on whether your street is scheduled for resurfacing this year, please visit the Streets LA website at https://streetsla.lacity.org/ and select ‘Road Repair’.

In Jeff’s Memory, a Yellow Bike Memorial was Unveiled

In November 2016, Sunland resident Jeff Knopp was struck by a vehicle and killed while riding his bicycle on Foothill Blvd. Three months later, a pedestrian was struck and killed on this same stretch of road. LADOT Official implemented safety measures including a protected bike lane that have resulted in a 100% reduction in fatal collisions and a 63% reduction in collisions ending in serious injury.

In Jeff’s memory, a Yellow Bike Memorial was unveiled near the intersection of Foothill Blvd. and Riderwood Drive. Thank you to Jennifer Knopp, Streets Are For Everyone – SAFE, and La Tuna Canyon artist Scott Froschauer for working with the LA Office of Community Beautification on the Adopt-A-Median project to make this memorial possible.

I am proud to have recognized Angel City Soccer in Council today. This women-founded team is making history in the sports world both on and off the field. Their work in the community includes supporting food pantries, hosting soccer clinics, and providing opportunities for young Angelenos to explore the sport.

Advocates for pay equity in a male-dominated industry, players receive 1% of every ticket sale. I wish a winning season to the team and for this to be the start of better equity in sports.
