No child should go hungry in school!

This morning, I was proud to join the First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom, CA State Superintendent Tony Thurmond, LAUSD Superintendent Alberto Carvalho, County Supervisor Hilda Solis and my colleagues Assemblymember Miguel Santiago, Senator MarĆa Elena Durazo for a roundtable discussion about the strides made to bolster the California Universal School Meals program.

In my district, itā€™s not unusual to see school districts with upwards of 85% of its students on free or reduced-price lunch. Thatā€™s why I have fought for several years to help make this funding a reality, because no child should ever go hungry.

As an early leader on this issue in the legislature, I am proud that California was the first state in the nation to adopt a Universal Meals Program statewide for all school children, in order to elevate school meals as an integral part of a quality education system.

Students need access to nutritious meals not just for their health, but also to be academically successful in the classroom.

On Friday, I joined Metro and local officials in breaking ground for the East San Fernando Valley Light Rail Transit Project.

For generations, the San Fernando Valley has too often been shortchanged from the meaningful transportation investments that many families and communities desperately rely on. As a first-generation American of Mexican descent, whose mother never learned how to drive, I couldnā€™t help but think about the nine-year-old version of me with my mom and kid sister who was trying to navigate a complicated RTD public transportation system that was never consistent just for a dentist appointment.

I dedicated the groundbreaking to those families who desperately rely on a public transit system that hasnā€™t always shown up for them, for the essential workers who kept our city running when everyone else stayed home.

The line’s first segment will run for 6.7 miles along Van Nuys Boulevard, connecting Van Nuys, Panorama City, Arleta and Pacoima. It will include 11 stations. This segment is scheduled to open between 2028 and 2030.

The second 2.5-mile segment, for which the design options are still under study, will be from Pacoima to the Sylmar/San Fernando Metrolink Station and include 3 stations.

Iā€™m incredibly grateful for the collaboration and partnership with Metro. We are going to see this project all the way through.

Last year, my team and I coordinated an effort with the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, LA Family Housing, and LA County Department of Mental Healthā€™s HOME Program to house 35 individuals at the Foothill Lot in Lake View Terrace. That property, which is adjacent to the 210 Freeway Osborne exit, has been a challenge for decades, largely suffering from illegal dumping.

After persistent coordination with Caltrans, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and Southern California Edison, I am proud to announce that the construction to permanently secure the lot with fencing has begun! Completion is expected by the end of this month.

Iā€™m proud to deliver these long overdue investments and security enhancements to this location, complicated for being both a high fire severity zone and multi-jurisdictional lot. The required coordination was unprecedented, and I will continue to hold these agencies accountable to maintain their right of way.

I look forward to sharing the continued progress on my efforts to solve long standing public health and safety challenges at this location and others throughout our community.
