LA Metro is hosting three open houses for Angelenos to learn more about the East San Fernando Valley Light Rail project, the first of which is this Thursday! At the open houses, Metro will provide a presentation and then hold an open house during the last 30 minutes.

As a reminder: the line’s first segment will run for 6.7 miles along Van Nuys Boulevard and include 11 stations. This segment is scheduled to open between 2028 and 2030. The second 2.5-mile segment, for which the design options are still under study, will be from Pacoima to the Sylmar/San Fernando Metrolink Station and include 3 stations.

Here are the details for the open houses:

Three Open Houses About the East San Fernando Valley Light Rail Project

I was born and raised in the San Fernando Valley, and since I can remember, cruising has been in our culture’s DNA. It’s more than laying low and driving slow – it is self-expression, a way of living, and engrained in Latino culture.

In the 1980s, the California Legislature passed a discriminatory state law enabling cities to pass anti-cruising ordinances. As the Legislature has become more inclusive, we have been doing the work to repeal these discriminatory laws.

Last year, I authored ACR 176, encouraging local cities to repeal their anti-cruising ordinances and to work with their local car clubs and law enforcement to host safe cruising events. After bipartisan support and success, cities like Sacramento and San Jose lifted their cruising bans. Other auto clubs have also engaged in conversations with their local governments to remove the decades-old ordinances.

This year, I am a proud Joint Author of #AB436 to repeal this archaic state law.
The work for making cruising legal in California is not done yet, and I am excited to tackle this issue with Assemblymember Alvarez. #CruisingIsNotACrime

Board of Public Works Commissioner Susana Reyes and I delivered a check to the San Fernando Valley Japanese American Community Center, which is located in Pacoima.
This donation was made available through the dissolution of the Tillman Japanese Garden Visitor’s Center Foundation.

I’m thrilled that the San Fernando Valley Japanese American Community Center will be benefiting from these funds. This enables the Center to continue doing its incredible work preserving and promoting Japanese culture.

Here in Southern California, 11 of our community members were killed in the Monterey Park mass shooting on Saturday, January 21. Less than 48 hours later, seven farmworkers from “Concord Farms” and “California Terra Garden” suffered that same tragic fate. One was also injured.

I adjourned in their memory last week because farmworkers do the work that often no one else will do. They toil our fields for long hours—many times, for inhumane wages and under inhumane living conditions. Rain or shine, they’re out there working, providing food for our families.

I want to send my heartfelt condolences to the loved ones of these victims.

Thank you to our community leaders for alerting my office of trash and debris on state property. My team reached out and coordinated with Caltrans District 7 to conduct a trash and debris cleanup at the Interstate 5 SouthBound Paxton Street off-ramp in Pacoima last week. Thank you CalTrans for keeping our residents and motorists safe!

Every February, the U.S. honors the contributions and sacrifices of African Americans who have helped shape the nation. Black History Month celebrates the rich cultural heritage, triumphs and adversities that are a part of our country’s history.

In honor of Black History Month, I would like to spotlight Crystal Jackson who is the founder and president of the Pacoima Historical Society. The mission of the organization is to preserve Pacoima’s cultural past through the gathering of images, books, objects, and oral histories that span its 1,500-year history. As a native of Pacoima, Crystal has organized culturally-themed community programs that have engaged and uplifted #AD43. These historical projects have taught youth the importance of preserving history and learning from the past.

It is an honor to represent committed community leaders like Crystal!
