Since becoming the first Latina to Chair of the City’s Public Safety Committee, I have made it my priority to innovate and deploy programs that heed the calls for reform and create a safer Los Angeles.

It’s why yesterday we unveiled Project TURN (Therapeutic Unarmed Response for Neighborhoods), a public safety initiative that will provide much-needed training and support to community intervention workers who are regularly exposed to high trauma environments.

Providing them comprehensive training and support is an important tenet of how our City will deliver transformative change, strengthen our public safety response, and create more equitable investment in a community based public safety model.

Too often, Angelenos are tragically killed or injured as a result of badly maintained and poorly designed city streets. It’s why I have prioritized public safety since taking office, and why in collaboration with the Bureau of Street Services (BSS) and the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT), my office identified Foothill Blvd., between Bledsoe St. and Polk St., in Sylmar as being in great need of positive change.

In addition to being resurfaced, Foothill Blvd. was recently reconfigured to one travel lane in each direction to calm traffic and create space for a new bike lane. Additional safety improvements include fresh paint and new crosswalks.

It is my pleasure to recognize Patricia (Pat) Austin for Black History Month.

Prior to moving to Los Angeles, Pat Austin received her Bachelor’s Degree from Marshall University and completed additional coursework at the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania.
During the 1960s and 1970s, she served as a Civil Rights and Community Activist working with students and national leaders and leading a movement to desegregate lunch counters and other public facilities in Pittsburgh.

Currently, Pat Austin serves as the Executive Director of the Valley InterCommunity Council’s Alicia Broadous-Duncan Multipurpose Senior Center in Pacoima. She plays a critical role in getting our seniors connected to local and state resources.

Pat, you are deserving of this recognition. Thank you for your leadership during the Civil Rights movement, and thank you for community work in #AD43. #BlackHistoryMonth

A state law, Senate Bill 1383, mandates that we keep organic waste out of landfills to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In response, my office—in partnership with LA Sanitation—is offering *FREE* kitchen pails to help City of Los Angeles residents recycle their food scraps.

Customers can collect food scraps throughout the week using the kitchen pail and empty the contents of the pail into the green trash bin for weekly collection.
Each of my three district offices is distributing the free kitchen pails. To request one, you can sign-up using this link https://bit.ly/CD7FreePails OR call my Sylmar District Office at (818) 756-8409, Pacoima District Office at (818) 485-0600, or Sunland-Tujunga office at (818) 352-3287.

We will then contact you to schedule a pick-up day/time.

Please note: there’s a limit of one kitchen pail per household.

On Thursday, I had the immense pleasure of hosting the Council District 7 Principal Appreciation Luncheon once again.

At this annual event, over 40 principals and assistant principals were introduced (or re-introduced) to my entire staff and engaged in conversations around how we can collaborate to improve the safety and cleanliness in our neighborhoods, with special focus around our schools. This event has yielded great results over the years and helped me prioritize budget initiatives, like fighting for increased funding for crossing guards.

Also invited to join our luncheon was our local Senior Lead Officers, to ensure that they are building relationships with the principals and campuses in their areas necessary for our public safety.

Thank you to Hovsep Navasardyan, owner of Aurora Banquet Hall in Tujunga, for hosting us. These past couple of years have not been easy for small businesses, but I’m grateful for partners like Hovsep who generously open their doors to host our community for events like this.
