This morning, in collaboration with members from our Sylmar community, we unveiled Phase One of the improvements slated for San Fernando Road. Dubbed the “Moving Beauty Pathway,” a series of pedestrian improvements aims to improve safety while enhancing the local culture of our communities in Sylmar. These improvements were informed by the extensive community engagement process we led in partnership with Tia Chucha’s Centro Cultural and the Sylmar Neighborhood Council.

The intersection of Paddock St. Oro Grande St. and Astoria St. along San Fernando Rd. now have high visibility symbols of “Xochitl,” meaning flower and “Ollin,” meaning movement, that help grab the attention of drivers for enhanced pedestrian safety. Additional phases will include art installation along the bike path and additional lighting.

On Latina History Day, we recognize community activist and trailblazer Irene Tovar.

Irene Tovar has roots in Pacoima and has been active in the Latino community since the 1960s. She worked alongside Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta on issues concerning migrant workers, access to state jobs, and children’s rights. She was also the first Mexican-American appointed to the State Personnel Board under Governor Jerry Brown’s administration.

Tovar has made an imprint in higher education, founding the Chicano Studies program at CSU Northridge and the Los Angeles Mission College (LAMC), where she serves on LAMC’s advisory board.
#AD43 is incredibly lucky to have Irene Tovar. #LatinaHistoryDay

Please join my team on Saturday, March 18, 2023 from 7:30am to 12:30pm for a community dump clean up day in #Pacoima hosted by Caltrans District 7 and Clean California at the Paxton lot.
This event is open to everyone across #AD43 and is an environmental friendly and safe way to help community members dispose of any bulky furniture items free of charge at the Paxton Lot located at 12501 Foothill Blvd., Pacoima, CA 91331.

As part of California’s Clean California Initiative, these events help discourage and prevent illegal dumping along the State Highway System by providing the public a means to avoid landfill fees and creating equitable access to disposal options for all Californians. Our district is not a dumping ground, and I was proud to advocate for the Clean California Initiative funding for cleanups, projects, and events like this.

If you have any questions, please contact my district office at (818) 504-3911.

Los Angeles is predicted to receive another round of heavy rain. Please exercise caution when driving and walking near the Pacoima or Tujunga Wash. Storm runoff will be moving fast.
To help City of Los Angeles residents prepare for the rainstorm, the Los Angeles Fire Department is providing free, ready-to-fill sandbags year-round at all neighborhood fire stations.

If you need sand and sandbags, please visit the following fire stations in AD43:

– Sun Valley / La Tuna Canyon – Fire Station 77, 9224 Sunland Boulevard;
– Sylmar / Sylmar Recreation Center (adjacent to Fire Station 91) – 14430 Polk Street.

If you need help locating local fire stations in LA, please visit: https://www.lafd.org/fire-stations/station-results.

Creating cleaner, safer communities has been my highest priority since taking office. Many wealthier communities enjoy the ability to have supplemental services paid for by private businesses–historically, this has not been the case for our community. It is why I created and funded Operation Bright S.P.O.T., to focus on commercial and residential corridors to conduct power washing sidewalks, litter pickup, weed abatement, and tree stump removals, and bulky item removals.

The Operation Bright S.P.O.T. crew was out in Sylmar performing much needed tree stump removals and weed abatements.

If you know of a neighborhood that would benefit from Operation Bright S.P.O.T., please contact my Pacoima office at (818) 485-0600, Sylmar office at (818) 756-8409, or Sunland-Tujunga office at (818) 352-3287.

I could not think of a more deserving woman to recognize on International Women’s Day than Irene Tovar. Irene is a proud product of the Northeast San Fernando Valley. Born and raised in Pacoima, Irene graduated from California State University, Northridge (CSUN), and currently resides in Mission Hills. Irene continues to be a trailblazer for women and Latinos who paved the way in higher education and in the workplace. While attending CSUN, Irene was one of six Latinos on campus; as motivation to finish her studies, Irene used her struggles to advocate and inspire others to do the same. Irene currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the Latin American Civic Association–a non-profit multi-family service agency that focuses on affordable housing and social services programs, was the founder of the San Fernando Valley Neighborhood Legal Services, played a key role in the founding of Los Angeles Mission College, and currently serves on the City of Los Angeles Human Relations Commission.

Last year, Irene received her Honorary Doctorate Degree from her alma mater California State University, Northridge (CSUN), where she continues to serve on the Alumni Association and continues to fight to bring diversity and inclusion to the campus. Irene fights for what is just and what is right and treats everybody with dignity and respect.
I am proud and honored to call Irene my friend, constituent, and trailblazer.

Last week, I had the opportunity to tour Summit View Apartments, a 49-unit permanent supportive housing complex located in Lakeview Terrace. In collaboration with LA Family Housing and Many Mansions, Summit View Apartments will provide permanent housing for veterans experiencing homelessness.

Homelessness is the most pressing issue facing Los Angeles, and I’ve continued my work to not only ensure housing solutions, but ensure prudent use of taxpayer dollars, demanding greater transparency and accelerating progress for our families and neighborhoods.
