Last weekend, I partnered with the Department of Recreation and Parks, encouraging the public to keep water safety in mind to prevent life-threatening accidents. According to the California Department of Developmental Services, drowning is the leading cause of injury-related deaths among children ages five and under. Learning to swim and practicing water safety in a supervised environment saves lives.

That is why I was proud to partner on this community initiative to provide accessible and life-saving water recreation to all ages in the community of all abilities.
I thank our partners and the Department of Recreation and Parks staff for providing these opportunities that make use of our treasured aquatic facilities and teach our kids life-saving swim skills.

Summer schedules for each pool may vary. For more information regarding pool use and to locate an LA City pool, please visit www.swimla.org or call the Aquatics Division at (323) 906-7953.

It was great to chat with University of California President, Dr. Michael V. Drake.

President Drake’s efforts to ensure college affordability for students from low-income families is incredibly important to creating accessible public education.

I look forward to working with him to double the Pell Grant and make higher ed more affordable.

Blood donors save lives. Unfortunately, there is an ongoing shortage of donor blood.

I advocated for an end to discriminatory blood donation policies that contributed to this shortage, and this year the FDA finally got rid of the rule that banned gay and bisexual men from giving blood.

On World Blood Donor Day, you can find your closest blood donation center here (https://www.redcrossblood.org/local-homepage.html).

Congratulations to Pueblo y Salud, Inc. for being recognized as #AD43’s Nonprofit of the Year! Pueblo y Salud, Inc. was founded in 1991 and has served the San Fernando Valley for over 32 years with a wide range of health workshops and programs. Their organization has served our community with a focus on education, civic participation, health, culture, and drug/alcohol/tobacco prevention services.
